Help me out here...

I need to know what quanties and equipment I'd need to create a 250 computer network in a building. No need to include servers, just basic stuff.

Baiscally I have

internet > router > firewall > switches (6, 48 port)...

but what come after switches? would the 250 cables go directly do each computer or is there something in each office or room or floor that is inbetween the computer and the switch?

...firewall > switches (6, 48 port) > hub (each room/'area') > data jack > computer?

Or would there be a network patch panel of some sort. My building ideally would be one floor.

thanks guys, our professor decided not to teach us anything before assigning this

You will need a patch panel and then the cables go into wall plates and then the computers plug into that.

uhh... why a router then firewall? What kind of internet connection? Who is handing out DHCP and DNS... that's all basic stuff.

depending on the size of the building, you would typically have a central wiring closet where every data jack is centrally terminated. each switchport would connect to the patch panel with a corresponding jack number.

Wow that is a lot of machines to manage without some form of centralized management. You may want to rethink the no servers thought.

haha of course, the reason why there are no servers listed is because he wants to go over that later on. This list of parts is just to build off of for the eventual final paper/project.

thanks guys, im gettin the idea now

Cisco ASA -> Cisco 1841 ISR -> 6 - Cisco Catalyst 3560G-48TS -> Patch Panels -> Network Drops (4 to 6 or even 8 connections per drop, I always go a bit overkill with wiring, I figure patch panels are cheap and its a PITA to add more later and very rarely does 1 user = 1 port...) -> Clients

unless you want VoIP for all of the clients then you will need segment and distribute your router load and double your switching requirements.

Allright that all went well but now I need a 5 year evergreening plan to see what and how much would need to be replaced every 5 or so years.

However, computers aren't included here so going obsolete is not an issue.

I know switches, routers, and firewalls can die out of nowhere, but how could I guess that would happen? Phones, card swipes, panels.. should last much longer than 5 years right?
