For gaming at 1920x1080, 5850 for $280, gtx 470 evga for $308 after BCB, or a GTX 470 galaxy with upgraded cooler for $340 after BCB. I would not be overclocking anything and my budget maxes at $350. I cannot get myself to buy one. I really want physx, though not sure a single card solution can handle it. I mainly game with some dvd watching. *sigh* I desire the 470, but the noise and higher cost are kinda pushing me away. I only upgrade every 2 years.

If nv's marketing has convinced you that you need hardware physx then pay up. They deserve compensation for their valuable efforts.

If it helps to justify the extra $, EVGA is a fantastic company. They also deserve your $.

Personally the 5850 is THE card I recommend this generation but that 470 for 308 is too good of a deal to pass up. Bite and never look back.

Hardware PhysX is just one thing. You could go by performance alone and be happy.

But if Linux wasn't a requirement I personally would go for a 5850 and be even happier. IMO the 470 is not that great of a card compared to competition (I'm not into noisy furnaces under my desk), and certainly not worth even $28 more.

Well, that's your opinion and entitled to it. But 28 bucks for an all around superior performing card? I don't think anyone would have a problem with that on a regular basis.

And noisy furnace is a bit extreme IMHO.

P.S. where the heck did Linux come from? :D (and don't say Linus Torvalds, hehe)

My own personal requirement, and one which disqualifies all ATI products for me. Which is why I'm speaking hypothetically instead of waving my credit card at some etailer.

My personal situation makes me an nvidia fanboy -- which means hanging out till they deliver a decent value on a product I don't find offensive. Bring on Fermi II!

Superior is a matter of benchmarks. Would a 5-10% better performance allow me to turn up the resolution or effects in any game? No, it would not. Would $28 buy me enough beer to more than make up for not seeing an extra frame/second on a benchmark? Yes, it would.

Absolute performance only counts for e-peen and the #1 product. Everywhere else it's all about bang for the buck.

With those prices I'd definitely go with a GTX470, the stock one. You get more performance and also get to play with PhysX. Hey, it's only $28 more - no big loss if you don't like it in the end. And the GTX470 is faster than a HD5850, so it's not like you're paying more for less, even if you don't like PhysX in the end.

And then the beer would be gone.

Update guys.. I ended up with a powercolor 5850 pcs+. Not sure I made the right choice here, but I got a price of $269.99 shipped. That was tough to pass up. $40 less than the gtx 470. Though I think I would have preferred the 470, I like the cooler, quieter and considerably cheaper card.
