  • What YOUR PC will be used for. That means what types of tasks you'll be performing.
SD HTPC 720p and under, media server, torrents , dvd rips
and this pc stays on 24-7
  • If YOU intend on using any of YOUR current parts, and if so, what those parts are.
HD's seagate 320 gb x2
pc chips g55 7050/610i
zalman 7k alcu
2 x 1gb ddr2
antec sonata1 + antec 240 watt psu
I
  • IF YOU have searched and/or read similar threads.
didnt find enough info but I searched
  • IF YOU plan on overclocking or run the system at default speeds.
not sure yet

ok im down to the last parts needed for my new htpc (SD)
A new CPU

im not going to be running hdtv content (at most is 720) because the output is via 480 projector (16.9)

ive been running a pentium m 1.7 2mb l2 and it's been fine (video wise)
and from what Ive been reading L2 doesnt affect media (only gaming)
also vista HP x86 is alittle taxing on the older pentium m so time for a upgrade

so out of these 2 dual core's (e1200 or e2140)
which one would you choose?
(price of the two is not an issue lol $20 difference)
would the celeron be lower in power consumption? (both have speedstep:thumbsup🙂

(just tryin to be alittle greener)

Thanks

I would but I wanna cap the amount "limited upgrade funds"
I built my wifes gamin box not that long ago
im surprise she said it was ok to upgrade the htpc (she's prob cheatin on me heh)
to within reason

so total im spending is going to be less than what I paid for her e6550
$45 7050 mb
$48 2x1gb ram
reuse hd's
reuse dvdrw
reuse pvr
reuse case and psu
reuse vista

so im really tryin to spend less than 70 ish for a cpu

They all generate about the same heat, all have TDP ratings of 65W and are all pretty much the same chip. If price isn't an issue, might as well get the fastest one.

Volunteer to give up two Six-packs, or skip two combo meals.

You will be healthier 😉 , and in the long run you would enjoy smother HTPC.

lol me and the mrs need that (it's what keeps us together 😉 )
but I might go that route (either 2160, 2180,or 2200 if supported)

should I assume that the e2200 will work
(because the highest dual core thats on their supported list is e2180) 😕
cpu support list

I would assume so, but if you feel uneasy about it just get the 2180. It's the same chip except it has a higher multiplier if I'm not mistaken.
