Help me o/c my P3 800 POS

I'm trying to O/C my P3 800 Slot 1 100 FSB CPU.
I've got an Abit BX6 v1.0 Motherboard.
I've also got a Maxtor 7200 RPM 40 Gig HD.

When I set my FSB to 112 (from 100), It seems
that I get HD instability.

The symptoms are very sluggish disk access (espicially writes) and
ultimately system crash and potentially data loss (I believe).

This was experienced in Win98 SE.

My guess is that the Maxtor 7200 RPM 40G is very sensitive to IDE overclocking.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but overlocking FSB also increases IDE speeds as well???

Would slapping a big ass fan on my CPU solve the problem, or is it my HD?

Any help would be appreciated.

yup. increasing fsb will change your ide speeds (pci divider). the actual speed will depend on the divider, which is usually 1/2 or 1/3 or even 1/4. for example for the fsb of 100, the divider is 1/3 to give you the normal 33 mhz.

when you oc thru the bios, just check that your divider is small enough such that your pci bus speed stays around 33 mhz.

slapping a fan on your cpu only makes sure that your cpu do not get overheated and so your oc attempt will be more likely to succeed. this will not help the hdd situation in any way.

hope this has been useful!

Since my HD is not stable at 112/3 which is 37.3 Mhz IDE speed
my next best option is 112/4 which is 28 Mhz IDE speed.

Well, is it worth it?

I go from 800 Mhz CPU to 896 but lose in HD performance.
I'm not even sure my HD will be stable at 27 Mhz.

The other option is a stretch and that is to get some really
agressive cooling and try to set my FSB to 133. once at 133 FSB
I can set me IDE divider to 1/4 which put's my IDE at 33 Mhz which is what
it wants. But how many have got a P3-800/100FSB to overclock to 133 FSB??

I think my best bet is to stay at 100 FSB.

you need to get the pci bus back to 33MHZ ideally. with a bx board, this occurs at 133fsb with 1/4 divider. I'm not aware that you can get 1/4 divider at any lesser speed though some bx boards give you a 1/3 divider at 124fsb.
124fsb @1.8V is attainable but not with every 800MHZ chip. even fewer do x133fsb.you'll need good cooling to acheive that sort of o/clock!
good luck
