So you say. Most of the people I met in college were worthless drunkards or druggies. I have maybe 3 good friends I've retained from College. The rest are old high school buddies.
Granted, my graduating class was 60 people and most of us knew each other from kindergarten (K-12 total population was 612 students) so that may have been a factor, but dont' discount high school friendships.
Munchies, try to decide how rooted you are to your current life. If you don't foresee yourself grieving from losing the friends you have there, don't fret it. Your best high school friends are usually made senior year anyhow.
I'd consider that big chunk of change a rather good incentive. Use it wisely and you'll have a great head start for when you need to fend for yourself.
However, IMO Tucson is a gigantic shithole. Everyone I know who's lived there says it sucks because all the good stuff is in Phoenix. The minorities and underprivileged are taking over the town and encroaching on the once lustrous upper class territory. You might be sheltered from it by being in the suburbs though.
Next time you're in Tucson, go to the restaurant called "The Tack Room" - 5 star restaurant. Supposedly some of the best food you'll ever have.
