Help me Jailbreak my iphone

I have a 3GS that is running 4.0. I have no idea on how to JB it but I need to be able to tether. Any help is appreciated.
 
Jailbreaking your phone is legal, but I don't know if Anand would like to directly help you work around your service contract to enable tethering without paying for it.
 
Oh lord you have the easiest version to jailbreak.
On your phone, go to jailbreakme.com and flip the switch.
You're done.
Install ultrasn0w if you want to unlock it.
You have a highly desireable 3gs right now.
I wish I can find more 4 and 3GS thats on 4.0 4.01 4.02
 
Thanks for the replies guys! Yeah one of the reasons I was holding off upgrading the fw was that the jailbreak could be done right on the browser. I couldn't remember the website, so thanks for that.

Is the firmware on jailbreakme.com stick once the phone is turned off or rebooted? Once I'm done with the phone I want to return it to the original 4.0 OS. Will that be possible?

What will unlocking it do for me? Just be able to take it to T-Mobile?
 
Yeah you can reboot as much as you like.
Don't need to hook it up to a computer.
Jailbreak doesn;t do anything to your firmware. Still on 4.0
Yeah you can use it for tmobile or any GSM network outside the US.

This is where I am at. I'm guessing that I have to input something here but don't know what. I've googled it and can't seem to find anything.

instead of starting a new thread, i'm just going to ask a question for my dad's iphone (hopefully be easy!)

"i" have an iphone 2g, that's currently jailbroken/unlocked on 3.0. i think the latest is 3.1.2 for iphone 2g.
how should i approach going to 3.1.2? do i just use itunes to restore to 3.1.2, then jailbreak?
is it still unlockable? tia! (thanks in advance!)

What network are you on? I'm assuming ATT, so google ATT APN and I found this:

That solves the first part, and most important one.

Then I googled "ATT APN voicemail" and found this through another result:

That thread in the first 5 or so posts pretty much solved everything. It looks like you don't even need a username and password in any of them, just the address right.

So there ya go, took 5 minutes. Your googling needs some work mate 😉

Latest for 2G is 3.1.3.
Yeah you can JB/unlock fairly easy.
Not as easy as jailbreakme.com

Thanks for all of that. Yep, that seems to have solved it all. I had googled iphone 3G/3GS APN, etc but never thought of putting ATT in there. I am now in tether heaven!
