Help me Isolate my Overclocking Problem

I have run my system (e6600) at the specified settings:

1) Successful
429x7 = 3.0ghz
vcore = 1.35
mch voltage = +0.1
timings = 5-5-5-15

2) Successful
429x8= 3.43ghz
vcore =1.36
mch voltage = +0.1
timings = 5-5-5-15

3) Unsuccessful
(350-420) x 9
vcore = 1.45
mch = +0.2
timings = 5-5-5-15

Why is it that I can do the following with lower multiplier but I can't do it with the 9x multiplier that the e6600 possesses. I am getting slightly perturbed and I am not sure if it's a memory problem or a motherboard problem. I vividly remember Duvie talking about an issue with the multiplier and whether it was a motherboard or a memory problem..I just can't seem to find the thread however.

Any idea what the problem is? Is it the e6600? the motherboard? or the memory?

First of all upgrade your bios to the latest, F10. I have a similar problem with the stability of my E6400 on a DS3(same as S3). I need 1.4675v to run my CPU stable at 3.2GHz(4x800). I tried with MCH +0.3v, FSB +0.3v and lower CPU voltage, but my system is unstable. At 3GHz(375x8) it needs 1.41v Vcore and FSB +0.1v to run stable. I am suspecting that my crappy 420W PSU causes the unstability of my OC-ed system. I have not tried with a better PSU yet.

I am running an Antec NeoHe 500 W so I do not think my power supply is the problem

Jesus, 1.46V seems incredibly high for an E6400...is it just me? Mine runs stable for three hours in Orthos at stock voltage across the board. I'm guessing if I bumped it even .1V I could get a full 24 hours stable. (Waiting on a mobo RMA to find out)

I just sold my S3 board and I'm getting an Asus P5B Deluxe board in a few days. I'm hoping it doesn't give me the same problems.

Dude, with these bleding edge boards you need to always update your bios ritualistically before you RMA them.

I have S3's and DS3's and E6400's, E6600's and even had E6300's...

I never experienced an FSB hole like yo uare showing. My E6600 runs 9x378 right now on an S3. It ran that on my DS3.....I have tried all different fsb and I haven't notice any holes....

So I going to say it is the mobo or some other setting you are using......

I've already maxed out all possible settings and voltages so I can almost be certain it is the mobo. I've tried the e6600 and an e6400, and now that I have it here with me, the e6300. If the e6300 does not reach 400x7 I think I can be certain it is my revision 1.0 S3 motherboard.

Took me at least four months and now i've given up.

Well, it appears that after endless hours of tweaking, I've given up on my board and bought an Asus P5B Deluxe.
My overclocking problems were all related to a dummy S3 motherboard. With the P5B Deluxe, I had absolutely no FSB holes nor any trouble overclocking my e6600 or the e6300.

Guess this calls for a change in my comp specs in my signature. -_-

Of all the boards I just had to get the crappy one ... lol

For people who are interested, I am 5-hours Orthos Stable (and counting) with the following settings:

7x460 = 3220mhz
vcore = 1.325 (as stated in BIOS)
TAT temps = 35/52C (after a reseating of my Ninja - that heatsink is amazing. AS5 applied in the way I've always done it - spread on with an expired credit card....that line down the middle seriously did not work for me)
Memory Timings = 5-5-5-15

I'm going to try for the maximum overclock at 1.35 vcore and then mess with my timings.

Thanks for all the help everyone gave me regarding my overclocking problems. Looks like they are history wit this board.

That S3 was a good choice, you apparently just got a bad one.

I have gone all over 350 to 450mhz with my S3 with an E6300, and it never hiccups.
