I purchase my computer from an online company...so the only thing i kno about the motherboard is what they post, "810XP 266Mhz FSB AMD Athlon". I've been trying to install a new GeForce4 MX440 but have been unsuccessful. The motherboard has a built in video card. I think that may be the reason why, but when i follow the instructions on installing a new card by deleting the old drivers, shut down the computer, install hardware....it seems as though the drivers reinstall themselves or something, but the new card isnt even detected. I dont think there is anything wrong the the card or my motherboard but im still uncertain of whats wrong. My BIOS doesn't seem to give me an option of disabling the built-in video card so I have no idea what to do. Whenever I install the hardware and boot up...the Add Hardware Wizard doesn't even come up, Does anyone know what i can do or know what to do?

What kind of board do you have? I'm sure there's an option to disable the onboard video... look in something like integrated peripherals or something to that nature in the bios.

Yea I have but theres nothing i see that indicates an option for disabling the onboard agp. The only thing I know about the motherboard is this:

Mainboard
200/266 Mhz AMD Athlon Front Side Bus
Supports Advanced Configuration and Power Management Interface (ACPI)
2 168-pin DIMM sockets
Plug and Play BIOS
1 4X AGP Slot
2 PCI Slots
1 Floppy Port (up to 2.88MB)
2 IDE Ports supporting up to four Ultra DMA 33/66/100 devices
1 Parallel Port (EPP/ECP)
1 Serial Port
2 USB Connectors
2 PS/2 Ports

Graphic Card
64MB Sis Display Adapter
Embeded Sis VGA
128-bit 3D AGP Graphics Accelerator
64MB frame buffer in North bridge
Upto 1920 X 1440 Resolution

I believe it means a built in ...

I think perhaps this link is in reference to your mobo, may wanna look, not that it will help you immediately :)

As for your graphics, I remember studying this quite a bit back when I had an old HP with intel 810, and saved some tech posts regarding disabling onboard video for some boards.

A lot of such boards were made without means to disable because putting a card in the agp port would automatically disable onboard (although in some cases it can't be "fully" disabled).

Anyway, although I'm not sure what your problem is, I can think of a couple of things I would try. When restarting, did you tell your bios to reset configuration data?

Also, check the add/remove software for any programs possibly related to running your onboard graphics (probably not, but wth)

As far as it just reinstalling your onboard graphics without prompting you, possibly if you knew that a particular .inf file was being loaded you could temporarily move it in order to get a prompt. Otherwise I would consider what registry keys to delete, but that would require some caution.

I'm not the best expert here, but there's my lousy 2 cents till you can do better, gl :)

It sounds like you may have a M810 motherboard, this has an SIS730 chipset and SIS Integrated graphics scaleable from 8 to 64mb shared memory.

With this board, I am almost certain that there is no option to disable the onboard video, it simply disables itself when you plug in a card into the AGP slot.

The only option I remember seeing with PC Chips M810 boards I have worked on is the option to set the system to use PCI Slot or Onboard AGP first for graphics, perhaps try changing this.

Thinking about it more....there may be an option but I don't recall where.

If you cant disable the onboard video in the motherboard's BIOS, you can certainly do it in Windows XP device manager.
My advice is to install your MX card and let windows boot up. Let it do whatever it wants because ultimately, you will disable
the onboard video. After you boot up, get into your device manager and go into "display adapters". You should see both of them, (the onboard and the MX)
Right click on the onboard and select "disable". click apply and reboot. Install your detonator drivers and you shoud be home free.

Anyone disagree with my way?

Hope this helps you.

P.S. make sure you have your monitor cable on the correct video port.
