OK So I need to build a new desktop, Mine is officially been titled as 'Junk'. Where do I start. I want average storage, and monster video for gaming.

If you have to ask what parts you need to build your own PC... you shouldn't build one.

Storage these days is pretty cheap. Go for either a 160GB or 200GB. Those are the best sizes for price/performance ratio these days. Take your pick of manufacturer. And always get yourself the "Special Edition" versions with 8M of Cache. They are barely more expensive and have 3yr warranties.

The Nvidia 6600GT seems to be the best mid range card available now as well. If you have the extra cash , you can maybe get a 6800 or 6800 GT.

I'd get myself a socket 939 A64 with 1GB of DDR 400. Stick to name brand ram like Crucial,Kingston,Corsair or Mushkin. Most of these have "value" sticks which aren't too expensive.

Get yourself a good name brand PSU too, in the 380-420W range. Avoid the cheap 30$ Case + PSU combos. Antec , Enermax, and Sparkle are good brands.

Welcome to the AT forum. Couple of tips for ya...

First off, I would advise against calling attention to your post by saying, "I'm stoopid." This isn't likely to get you much more than flaming arrows if you really want help.

If you want a PC right now there's nothing wrong with calling Dell, telling them what you want it to do, letting them walk you through the video card, memory selection, etc. You'll get it delivered and ready to go. Yes, you have to put up with tech support but at least you have something to fall back on while you learn and plan your first build.

If you still want to build it yourself you need to start reading every forum, computer book and review site you can find. Post for advice on finding DIY web sites such as this one. and read, read, read.

It doesn't take much experience to put parts together to actually "make a computer," but to tweak, troubleshoot, and understand why some parts, drivers, software, utilities, mods and settings work better than others will take a while to absorb. You may also end up spending 4 times as much in the end if you buy components you don't really need or want.

Or, if you already know most of this and are just trolling for flames I'm sure you'll find more than enough right here.
