Hi there,

I've received some old parts from various donors, for my Europe project, and I came across these two cards.

I'm pretty sure one of them is a Voodoo Banshee chipset (PCI format), which should be good enough even these days, as long as you don't do any hardcore gaming.

Here are a couple of pictures:

Am I correct in assuming this is a Guillemot brand Blaster Banshee? I still can't figure out whether it's 8 MB or 16 MB...

I'm stumped about this second one... judging buy the sticker, the chipset *should* be a 8 MB Vanta (What on Earth were those? I don't remember them)... but who made the damn thing? I need to figure out what kind of drivers to look for... especially if there are risks "generic" drivers might not work.

Also, out of these two, which one is more powerful? I'm really curious - like I said, the computers I'm putting together are in no way cutting edge, but I'd like to know what I'm giving to people, and tell them about it.

Another thing is... I've been contemplating bundling Ubuntu Linux with some of the computers I'm making... is there any chance either of these cards will have working Linux drivers?

For the top card it would probably be 16MB. I have a Riva 128ZS with 8MB of memory and it only has 4 chips

Do you want me to post some pics of a couple of Number Nine cards? I also have some undescribable ATI ISA VGA card from around 1994... make you feel even better!

I had a 8mb vanta in my 500mhz PIII. I can't confirm if that's what your card is, but if it is, the vanta is a version of the TNT2. It ran Mechwarrior3 alright for me when that's what I was playing a lot.

Geforce/TNT2 drivers should work for it if it's a vanta.

First card looks like a Guillemot PCI 3dfx Banshee, 16mb.

Second card is probably a Gainward, maybe one of their Savage series? The banshee is definitely the faster card. The Vanta LT is an Nvidia chipset.
Savage4, closest match I could find. Most Gainwards started with GWV.

The Vanta was like the GF MX series of the TNT2 days. Except it wasn't actually that bad. A ton of OEMs used it because it was so cheap and effective. My old HP Pentium 3 667mhz rig had one.

Those are some HUGE pics!! Who the hell actually uses all 6 megapixels on their camera?!?!

As far as the cards are concerned...I'm willing to bet I was in diapers when they came out. Sorry :(

The second one looks to be a gainward TNT2.

The FCC ID returns jack, but the ICU part returns gainward cards. The P/N of v03-20 gets Gainward TNT2 variants.

Definitely Linux-friendly.

If the first card is a Banshee, it should be fine, as well, and would probably have better IQ, too.
