Help me identify the troublesome fan...

Here's the problem:
I have XP and Ubuntu on my computer.
When I boot up system sounds the same. Midway through the XP loading screen one of the higher pitched fans goes to a lower and much more acceptable noise level. Loading Ubuntu doesn't change a thing in noise level.
I have already identified that the cpu fan is not the problem after disconnecting it and testing noise level again.
That leaves me with 4 choices:

1. Big case fan (but it's 3 speed manually configured so I doubt its that)
2. Power supply fan (don't see how software would have an impact on that)
3. Video card fan (maybe better drivers for card in windows than ubuntu?)
4. HDD (but it's not a fan!)

What's your opinion on this?

Stop them with a pencil or your finger and find out. Or take your case side off and look.

I vote using a stiff rolled up piece of paper. Some fans can almost take your finger off. 😀

Gotta ask, it's not the DVD burner, right? I have eight fans, and my burner by far makes the worst racket. Windows could be dumb enough to needlessly give the burner a spin.

Otherwise, study your motherboard, not that many fan headers offer speed control.
