Whenever someone click on to my computer name on the network, they are prompted for a password. During the install of Win2k 'till now, i have never entered a password. I looked at my shares and i see C$, D$, E$ and IPC$. where did these come from? This win2k sharing thing is confusing me. please help.

You should do a search for this topic as it has been asked many times before.

What you need to do is create a user name / password on your win2k box that is identical to the user name/password of the person trying to gain access to your shared sources.

to clarify, the username/password that person uses on his/her computer is what you have to make on your win2k box.

considering this question is asked several times a day, I don't think you looked very hard.

In order fro Win9x or WinME to access shared resources on Win2k systems you have two options:

- enable the guest account in Win2k. this is disabled by default.

- create a user id and password for each person connecting to your system. those users will then be required to login to their Win9x or WinME system with a matching id and password.

Quickfingers...

When you share a folder, BE SURE to click "new share."

The Best way is to go to the computer management console and create the share there...very very easy to do just follow the instructions

The C$, D$, E$ and IPC$

Are default shares. They are hidden administrative shares.

If you create any shares with the $ on the end, they will all be hidden, and not available via a network browse.

Aside from the advice, all you have to do is go into explorer, right click a dir, hit sharing.

Give the permissions to the people you want to have. (read, write, etc)

FIXED!!!

I added Everyone, Guest, Guests, and network.

I'm guessing it was "guests" that allowed everyone to get in without asking for a password. No password whatsoever and ANYONE can access me.
