Help Me!!! How do I install XP on a SATA Serial HD? Bios detects but Xp doesn't.

Helppppppppppppp!!!!!!!!! It's driving me nuts. So I just purchased a SATA Serial ATA Hard drive... I am on a regular IDEI hard drive right now...

So I want to make the serial ata hd my primary drive cuz well, its 10k RPM . But when I open up Windows XP to install it, it doesn't detect it!!!

I bought this drive from Western Digital, OEM, so it didn't come with any disks or anything. I havn't formated/partitioned it either... BIOS detects the drive... so I don't know. I'm soo flippin' lost and its driving me mad.

Can anyone help me please? Hass anyone here done this before? Thanks!!

Try hitting F6 or whatever to install the drivers at the beginning of the XP install. Put the drivers on a floppy or something.

at the start of XP install put the SATA driver disk that should have come with the drive/mobo into the floppy, and when it says something about pressing F6 to install SCSI or RAID drivers do that. If you dont have the SATA drive floppy you should be able to get the files from the manufacturer's website. burn to CD or store on another HDD or whatever if you dont have a floppy.

If you don`t have a SATA driver and your board uses a Silicon Image controller for SATA,you get the drivers from here .

i hope microsoft starts to give the option to use a cd as a source for drivers in the next version... i had to slipstream the drivers for my sata controller, no floppy on the machine it was in.

as i remember ,u got to hit a button on the keyboard(forgot which 1) when u use the winxp disc boot up and the blue screen comes out

I still haven't figured out how to Slipstream SPs and drivers. I've only read like, 10 tutorials and had a million people try to help me.

I can build a space shuttle out of a toaster and a paperclip, but I can't figure out slipstreaming. Go figure.

thanks for the advice, but I still can't find the proper drivers for my SATA drive... I know about the F6 thing, but the only problem is the driver that I don't have. Anyone know were to get it? It's the Western Digital 36.0 Gig Raptor drive

The driver isn't for the raptor, it's for the SATA controller. If you didn't already make a floppy with the SATA controller drivers on it as instructed in the manual do so RTFM!

Guys, thanks for all the help! I fixed it. All I had to do was make a 3 1/2 floppy from a driver that was on the MoBoard CD-Rom and then I did the F6 thing. Thanks!!!!!

But one problem now, I have two hard drives on the system, now that the SATA drive is working, my regular IEDI drive isn't showing up. I have the slave/master settings working properly. Anyone know what to do?

Your regular IDE drive... is it a WD? If so, Master is the wrong setting if it's the only drive on that IDE cable. It needs to be set as "Single" IF it is the only drive on that IDE connector. If it is master to a CD drive, than forget what I said.

Also, the drive will not appear in Windows until it is formatted. Go to drive management in Admin tools to create a partition and format the drive.

It's actually a Maxtor...

If I partition it, it will wipe out all the data on the regular drive, right? I have lots of valuable info on that drive that I dont want ereased...

Ah, it's already partitioned. I thought it may be a new drive.

Try the other IDE connecter. RTFM to see if using the SATA connections disable one of the IDE channels.

Not familiar with that MB, however I think your 2nd drive should be set to cable select or slave.

Your 2nd HD should show up in bios. Your ide drive should be there under Primary (or Secondary) slave.

Your bios may have a 'Pci Config.' catagory. If so, set 'On Board Ata Device 1st' to NO.

Another question, does it matter if my Hard Drives are upside down in the case?

The green side(were the chips are) are facing up, and the silver part is facing down... so upside down. Does that slow it down at all, or cause that annoying 'churping' noise that I keep hearing?

Should I flip 'em over?

I still havn't figured out the second hard drive problom. Gonna mess with it some more right now.

make certain CD-ROM is set to the first boot device then boot from the XP CD and hit R to get to the recovery console, then type bootcfg /add and add the other windows install.

are you certain this will work?
also, when do I start pressing "R"? as soon as the windows setup screen comes on?

THere should be a screen that comes up asking you options on is the press r for recovery console.
