Help me hook up my simple stereo to my simple TV!

I've got a little Sony shelf system and a Wega 24" in my bedroom. I'm trying to run the TV's audio through the stereo's speakers, but thus far I've been unable to. I used to have the stereo connected to the PC, but I recently bought 5.1 speakers and I want to try the stereo out on the TV.

The stereo is connected to the TV via a basic composite three coloured cable, with the red and white plugs in the appropriate spots on both the stereo and TV.

Why is there no sound coming from the speakers? I know I'm missing something elementary here, but for the life of me I can't figure it out!

Most TVs don't have RCA outputs - I've never seen one that does - are you sure you didn't connect it to the inputs? Unless your TV has RCA outputs, the only way to do it would be to go through a VCR or cable box.

Edit:
If that's not it, make sure you've selected the correct input on the stereo?
Also, if your TV has a headphone jack you could get an adapter that converts it to RCA plugs

Well since you have a Wega and it's possible, apparantly some TVs do... but am I wrong in saying that most don't? I guess higher-end TVs probably would.

Pretty much like as described above: Run the red and white composite cables from the sound output on the back of the tv to an input on the receiver/amplifier. Make sure the tv is set to disable the internal speakers and send the sound to the line out. Make sure the stereo has the tv selected as the sound input source, and you're good to go.

Well, that's exactly what I would assume, but it appears my TV won't allow me to disable its internal speakers.

The stereo is set to video, which in this case is appropriate. The composite cables are both in the appropriate input/output location, the colours match.

However, there is no sound coming from the speakers. CDs play fine, but no sound from the TV.

Nope, I have the same model as you :)

Forget the remote, open the little door on the front, hit Menu - Down - Select, and make sure Speaker is OFF & Audio Out is set to Fixed :)

The way I've always done it, because most TVs ive seen dont have their own RCA OUTPUTS. Set it up like you would normally with a VCR coax in to VCR, then out to TV. Most VCR's these days DO have outputs, anyway, you dont need the 3 cable RCA wires to do this, any old rca's that you would use to install an amp in a car will work (since there is no use for video) run it to the AUX input on your stereo, and viola, surround sound with your TV. I've done this before with my TV, PS2, and currently with my PC.

All you guys that buy these 5.1 setups for your pc, pshhh.....nothing better than my 3way towers :D

I don't have that option in the menu. Following your method opens the picture settings on my model.

This is starting to get on my tits.

Hit Menu & you have an on-screen display, scroll down to the options for sound [Looks like a music note] and make sure the settings are what I posted, if that doesn't work, RTFM! :p

Believe me, I've check every setting in the menu. I simply don't have the option to turn off speakers. I have an option for the MTS type: Stereo, Mono, SAP. That's it.

RTFM is no help.

Are you kidding me? like every tv has rca audio outputs. Sh!t I got a tv sitting right next to me that is probably ten years old that has it. You think sony or any of the other manufacturers would make a tv with a tuner that hos no way to get audio from it to your system? Know what your talking about before you give advice man.

Also make sure that the inputs are working using something else on your stereo, just cause it plays a cd doesnt mean your pressing the correct input button.
