There is rather hot chick who is my neighbour. Sorry no PICS.. atleast for now.
Anyway a while back I helped her out cause she coudltn get on to the internet. She had a copy of NAV 2002 that i installed and cleaned it out. Everything was fine and dandy until today.

She goes to check her email. Her email's download. THen outlook express 6.0 gives an error and crashes. When she gets back NAV claims there is a virus and its been quarentined. Sure enough it quarientiend it, but the whole file, not just the email.

So now outlook has a new file for emails and its got the welcome message.
THe files NAV quarentined is of the ".dbt" format. Inbox.dbt and outbox.dbt. The inbox is 1.4MB and the outbox is like 600K. However those replacement files do not exist in the windows/application data/microsoft/outlook/ and /mail folder.

She didnt get to read her emails and I cant seem to find a way to take the virus out and clean it for good so she can read her emails. Any ideas on how to do it? Also how do I disable "scripting" in outlook express 6.

After I get it clean I told her I will let her use Netscape Messenger as her email client.

By the way the virus is loveletter.vbs

Thanks TGG

You may need to remove and rebuild the account. Not the identity itself, but just the account.

Tools > accounts > mail tab
Take down the settings
remove the account
add the account back in

If that doesn't replace the outbox.dbx and inbox.dbx files, try a new identity.

Even if nothing works, don't have her use Netscape Messenger. Netscape blows goats.

As long as the Inbox.dbt and outbox.dbt files don't have to be deleted, try changing them to dbx files, and use the import feature.

howcome I didnt think of renaming it to dbx and importing it.. I tried importing as .dbt and tried renaming it to .dbx but didnt try teh combination.. how weird of me.

will try that in the morning, in the mean time if someone has seen this problem post in here.

update

the virus is VBS.LoveLetter.CI (according to NAV2002). The funny part is I tried setting her up on Netscape mail and NAV caught it saying LoveLetter infected those netscape messenger files. This is netscape 4.5
I just finished a internet based scan for the virus ( housecall @ antivirus.com ) and it didnt find anything. I used the NAV loveletter fix and it supposedly fixed it, but somehow that virus is still there cause NAV caught it when I was trying to send an email from netscape.

Any ideas on how to get the virus out and get her old emails back from teh .dbt file?

I'm not sure I follow you. Was the PC ok after the norton fix, and then you setup Netscape, or was it never ok?

its never been okay. Apparently the internet based webscan for virus came clean. I am going to head back now to see if netscape stilll gets caught with the virus.

anybody else?
