Help me help my friend

So my friend's 19 years old, a sophomore in college. He has a job and a checking account with a MasterCard debit card attached to it. Yesterday he tells me he wants to buy something nice for himself. We decided on speakers for his laptop. I recommend the Logitech X-230s. We find them on ZZF for a mere $34.99 with free shipping. I'm like, wow that's a steal, just pick them up right now. He hesitates. I ask, what's the problem? He said, my mother's going to be pissed if she sees I bought something online.

My jaw basically just drops to the floor. I am amazed and he goes on to explain his mom doesn't trust online shopping and that he'll get in trouble if he does this. I'm like, W-T-F man, you're almost freakin' 20 years old. So I figure I need to help this kid, so I start badgering him to make the purchase, because I know later he'll feel good about it and be glad he did it. I got him to create an account and add it to his cart, but he wouldn't go through with the purchase. He said let me just ask, I'm sure she'll say okay.

Well, she gets home, and sees his debit card out and asks what he's doing with it. He said he found nice speakers online that he wanted to buy. Her response? "Uhh...I don't think so." He doesn't refute. Then he asks his father, who says he has no problem with it except for the fact that his mother has a problem with it. In other words, no.

How can I convince him that he does not have to listen to his parents and that they have no right to control his money and bank account like this? He should just order the thing and end it. What are they really going to do, I don't get what he is afraid of.

I need advice on how to persuade him.

In college and still mommy whipped. Pitiful. I don't hang out with those kinds of wusses, so I have no advice.

Tell him to grow a pair and just freaking do it.

Online shopping is safe and millions of people do it every day, only old technophobes (like his mother ) cower in fear at every BS MSNBC/CNN/Fox News story about the "risks of online shopping".

He doesn't like it either, he agrees it's ridiculous. IMO this is something he needs to do, it would be a revolutionary hurdle for him.

How about arming the parents with information to show that it's okay to make online purchases. They only say no because they aren't educated in this type of purchase.

this isnt the first storie that iv herd about ppl being afraid of online shopping. all my friends will not do anuthing with their debit card online.
i try to educate them and let them know the reality of the situations but it all goes over their head, and they immeaditaly comeback at me what the stuipd ass media puts int heir head. what a shame. i pay 99% of may bills online with my debit card, if i didnt have it it would be a great loss for me and ease of life i think.

It's not so much trying to educate the parents, it's the fact they they're exercising this kind of control over things that are purely his.

A lot of debit cards now come with great security, but I'd still rather not push him to use his debit card. If he has a credit card, then go ahead.

I'm on the border in this case.

Here is the thing. He needs to stand up for himself BY Himself. If you push him to do it he may regret it. Just sit back. Reassure that you make online purchases at will. Never any trouble. Trouble is possible but rare.

He's just getting on his feet it seems. Usually we fall shortly thereafter. We don't want the mother there to say.... "I told you so" ;)

I pay all of my bills online as well. Everything from water bills to 2 mortgages.

He's going to ahve to stand up by himself, but someone needs to make sure the ground is even first :D.

Is $35 a steal for the X-230? Doesn't sound like such a great price to me...

While I agree with this statement 99.99% of the time, this is one of those .01% times.
Simply rediculous.

If he is still living at home, it is their right to tell him what to do.

If it was me though, I would buy them anyway just to piss them off. :D

Fixed

I buy 95% of my electronics online, best deals are to be found there! I even did omahasteaks.com once upon a time :p I've never had my credit card or other personal information stolen, and there have been zero consequences from shopping online for me.

He just needs to sit down with his mother and argue it out. She can't possibly have a good argument, millions of people around the world use the internet to shop and only an insignificant fraction of them have any problems.

Here's a solution, have him give you the money and order them online for him using your card. It's a debit card, just have him withdraw the cash from an ATM.

What?! That is the most stupid statement I've ever heard.

His money that he earnt, using his debit card, to buy himself some thing. - Where do the parents come into this? They don't.

Tell his parents where the information goes when they purchase stuff in a real store it still goes through a netwrok and has to reach the company's headquarters somehow :)
