So my friend's 19 years old, a sophomore in college. He has a job and a checking account with a MasterCard debit card attached to it. Yesterday he tells me he wants to buy something nice for himself. We decided on speakers for his laptop. I recommend the Logitech X-230s. We find them on ZZF for a mere $34.99 with free shipping. I'm like, wow that's a steal, just pick them up right now. He hesitates. I ask, what's the problem? He said, my mother's going to be pissed if she sees I bought something online.
My jaw basically just drops to the floor. I am amazed and he goes on to explain his mom doesn't trust online shopping and that he'll get in trouble if he does this. I'm like, W-T-F man, you're almost freakin' 20 years old. So I figure I need to help this kid, so I start badgering him to make the purchase, because I know later he'll feel good about it and be glad he did it. I got him to create an account and add it to his cart, but he wouldn't go through with the purchase. He said let me just ask, I'm sure she'll say okay.
Well, she gets home, and sees his debit card out and asks what he's doing with it. He said he found nice speakers online that he wanted to buy. Her response? "Uhh...I don't think so." He doesn't refute. Then he asks his father, who says he has no problem with it except for the fact that his mother has a problem with it. In other words, no.
How can I convince him that he does not have to listen to his parents and that they have no right to control his money and bank account like this? He should just order the thing and end it. What are they really going to do, I don't get what he is afraid of.
I need advice on how to persuade him.
