Helping someone out and working in their old compaq pc

Has Gigabyte Motherboard GA-5SMM

Someone passworded the bios
and I entered the password and the bios seems still to be tainted.....not sure what is the problem.....can someone write a code into it so that you cannot have it seek drives or even go into dos prompt????
The only drive that is showing up is the a: drive or floppy in the bios.

Please Help......I must get this computer up and running....I downloaded the flashbios update from Giga's website.

I need help, this is new territory for me.....I have never had a situation where the computer would not go into dos prompt so that I could reload the bios.

If the bios on the system is password protected you can remove the battery, it may take a while for the bios discharge and reset to defaults. I'd leave it for a day, that way you should be ensured that the bios will be reset. Sometimes shorting the + and - of the battery terminals together doesn't work. I looked at the material Gigabyte has on line and it doesn't look like you have a reset jumper.
If the system can see the A: drive why can't you boot off of the floppy?

Great advice.

When it goes to boot off of the floppy it just all locks and sits there. And you just get to stare at the darn red compaq logo and nothing happens after that.
Prior to removing the password from the bios it would scan the drives and then try to boot. But when I try to get the cd-rom to read it then says missing cd-rom drivers. Yet the disc that I am booting off of is setup so that you can boot and then the cd-rom will load and win98 will go into setup.

When you look in the bios it is missing a key area.....you know where you can tell it to look for any drives. It's plain missing......and yet I was the one who looked at this pc about a year ago when my friend was having a problem......we had it look for the drives and we formatted it.
So that was why I tried to reset the bios.
It cannot see the cd-rom or anything else. I am in a real quandry with this. This is a new wrinkle that I have never encountered before.
If there is anything else you can think of that I might need to look at or try please offer.
I am hoping the battery removal bit will due the trick. Thanks again.
