My grandfather's PC won't start up. It's a HP 6355 or whatever. Anyway, the hard drive won't boot. When it starts up, it makes this constant clicking noise, like it's trying to find something. Actually, yea, it's trying to find Win98, but after a few secs, the monitor says "No Operating System Found". HP Customer Support is charging $25 per call for this particular model so, that's out of the question. Anybody have any ideas? It's Western Digital regular IDE drive. Could it be dirty or something's stuck inside? Help.

sounds like you're only bet is to run the System Recovery CD's (hopefully you have them)and hope the hard drive isn't kaput. usually, if it gets to "no operating system found" you're hard drive is still OK (in my experience)

Yea, but how will the system even access the CDROM drive, if it can't even pass the initial boot screen? How can I boot from CDROM drive?

i assume it still POST's..and if it does so, you can go into bios and tell it to boot from cd-rom first...or does it not POST? cause that's different...

Constant clicking noise?

I hope the system is under warranty, it's not uncommon for a hard drive to make that sound when it's dead/dying.
Even more so because it's a Western Digital. :|

If you got a Windows 98 boot disk try this.

Boot from disk and select boot without CD-Rom.

After it's done loading type
SYS C:\
FDISK /MBR

Hopefully it works for you.
