what kind of glue do you use to attach foam core together?

will rubber cement work?

i need to know!!! :(

-----

EDIT: poured in 6 hours of work on project, had to make an animal out of foam core. i chose tiger because i believed it was easy but i was proven wrong. :(

anyways, i used rubber cement, i had no choice between rubber cement and high temperature hot glue gun. i left my elmers glue in my locker at my industrial design department.

it turned out great. i received a lot of positive feedbacks during critique. i felt bad for others who worked hard and poured in like 12 hours of work but they got negative feedbacks. :(

pictures will be posted when i get my tiger model back.

oh and if you NEED to use rubber cement, apply a generous amount to both sides of the foam core, let them dry for about 5 minutes, then stick them together and apply a good amount of pressure for about 30 seconds to a minute.

Depends on what kind of foam it is.

the problem is that it takes time to remove rubber cement (leftover.)

oh man, just when I thought I'd forgot that stuff.

<spent a year in an ID program and then jumped to architorture school.

I got to know it very well. If you're actually building a model out of it, it's usually better to just use basswood or chipboard, foamcore virtually always looks like crap

but if you're using it for something else-

two options really:

1) quick and dirty - hot glue. this is what we did when building molds for simple cast parts, (about the only thing foamcore is really good for)

2) better looks - find a craft glue called sobo. it's like a thick elmers that sets up quicker. have to be careful though, if it gets anywhere you don't want it, it will look like crap. also doesn't bond very strong.

and if you're cutting it (and I imagine you are), get a big pack of xacto blades. foamcore dulls the blades REALLY fast, if you want to make clean edges, you have to switch blades every 4-5 cuts. or use a lasercutter.

Don't use rubber cement like some are saying. It will eat right through the foam. I was working with some yesterday and just tested a patch and it shriveled a large piece to practically nothing. I would go with hot glue or just use an elmers. If you can clamp it gorilla glue will set nicely and bond the pieces really well.

if foam core you mean is the foam that has layers of paper on the outside then any type of glue will be fine "tacky glue" is favored among architecture students. now if you mean actual styrofoam or foam like product "spray mount is the only thing that will stick them together for any significant period of time. anything else either won't dry or will eat away at the foam. remember architectural model's (for school) have a half life of only a few weeks hehe. if you are lucky!!!
