Check out the screenshot...S&D says I have Huntbar on the machine but it cán't remove it. Ad-aware says I have IBIS toolbar installed on my machine but it can't remove it. I tried removing it with regedit but it gives an error when I try to delete the key.

I found a similar toolbar that wouldn't remove with spyware programs on someone's computer a ways back. Go into Add/Remove programs and see if it is listed there...if so, remove it that way. (that was the case for me)

And for good health, try Firefox :)

This isn't my machine so I can't do a reformat. There are 3 or 4 users of this machine so it's not feasible.

I already looked under add/remove programs...I guess I will check again. Any other suggestions?

Also note there are TWO toolbars...one at the top in IE and noe at the bottom which comes up with IE but doesn't go away when you close it. (!)

Check out Schadenfroh's guide. Otherwise, basic tips are to run adaware & spybot in safe mode, and to google manual removal instructions if they fail you.

^^ what he said, and also remember to disable System Restore and look in your list of Windows Services (example pic) and see if it's put in some rogue service such as WinTools For IE. If so, stop and disable the service.

Right-click the parent of the key and see what the permissions are.

OK, so I put full permissions on the parent folder. Still no workie.

I try to check permissions for the taskcache folder, and it says I do not ahve permission to change permissions but I can view permissions. But there are no permissions! So WTF do I do???

I finally got rid of that junk. I had to claim ownership of the parent key and all subkeys and then I could add permissions to delete it.
