Help me get my sound card working in linux please (redhat)

I have two sound cards, neither one seems to be supported - I want to know if there's any way to get either of them working. I'm using redhat, but if switching distros will get sound working I'm willing to do it.

The first is an ISA with ESS1869 chip. The 1868 is supported, and when I choose this in soundconfig it goes through the first two tests ok (the one where the guy is talking), but fails on the midi tests. All I need is basic sound support, it's fine if midi doesn't work, but when the tests fail soundconfig gives me an error, and exits without changing anything. (sorry I can't be more specific, but I'm at work and my redhat box is home).

The second is an I/O magic magicsoundPCI card - it has an ESS allegro 1989 chip. This would be my preferred card if I could get it working, but this chipset isn't supported either. Is there a way to get this one working?

Thanks
