It's to be an Xmas gift for a relative who works in sales. She says that she has all these great ideas while in the car. I'm not really sure what sort of features are important to her. I spotted a couple of Olympus models which looked cool for the alarm features, but appear to lack a PC connection (something I would think is a deal-breaker, but mabye not everybody cares?). I guess voice-activation would be good if she wants to use it while driving. We don't want to spend a huge amount on this (she said so herself, btw).

hmm.....Olympus DS330 Digital Voice Recorder on amazon seems ok for $105. usb,etc

I use my pocket pc for that purpose...plus it does all the other stuff that would be handy for a salesperson (calendar, email, calculator, word documents, pdfs). maybe something like that would be an alternative for her?

Thanks for the reply and suggestion. Her company gives her a Tablet PC, so I think most of the other stuff is already handled there. I think $100 is a bit high for what I had in mind, but I'll definitely look into it.

Alas, my better half has checked my geek lust and downgraded to the low-end Olympus. The reasoning was that it may simply be a fad with the recording-wanting relative so it's best to stay at the low end. In any case, if I get a chance to play with it, I'll report back. :)
