im looking to make an upgrade somewhere in my computer setups.
i have the following:
- 2.66 c2d macbook pro, primary computer, sometimes i run it hooked to a larger display but mostly as a laptop. covers all my day to day stuff. i bring it with me to work its always in my bag.
- media computer (hp pIV 3.2 ghz, 1gb ram) with 2.25 tb of media hooked via hdmi to my tv
- downloading/internet computer (dell pIV 3.2 ghz, 1gb ram) i use this for basic internet and downloading from usenets. it does a lot of unrar/unpar work
wd live - with a separate 1.5 tb external drive hooked to another tv.
ive started to transition larger 720p/1080p media files and see space becoming a constraint in the near future.
i dont have my media library consolidated anywhere. i basically have two copies of my media.
at the bare minimum i think i need to make a media server. im in between a number of configurations.
i may go the WHS route and have it setup just to serve media to my different devices. In this case I would probably pull the machine hooked to the tv and convert it to a WHS.
Or
i may go the htpc route and have the htpc also be the media server
Or
i may upgrade the internet/downloading computer to make it both a media server and internet machine.
Some of my concerns include:
Redundancy. It seems people really like WHS for the 1:1 data back up. It seems people really prefer that to raid 5. Or they suggest multiple raid 1 arrays.
Im concerned that if I use my downloading machine and upgrade it to be a media machine if I have issues with the OS, get a virus have a problem I would have a risk of losing my media data.
My budget is about $1000.
I really think the best solution for me is to get a new primary desktop pc put in a decent quad core and a bunch of drives.
Use that machine as my downloading, encoding, extracting and serving box. If i do that then i have to figure out some way to backup my data. to back up 5 tb+ is difficult. i guess i would check out the raid 5 route.
or the other option is to upgrade that pc and put a WHS online. i dont have much in term of important docs or anything to backup. the biggest concern is media. can i run something like sabnzb on WHS? I think I can.
Thanks for the help!
