Help me fix uxtheme.dll :(

Ok... like an idiot i tried to patch uxtheme.dll (windows xp pro, latest service packs and updates). I rebootged and everything seemed fine, but when i switched to the new theme, everything went completely black (at least anything related to windows, i can see webpages and the like but i cant see anything where i can enter text, i'm typing this blind. Anyone know what i have to do to fix this, i'm rather kinda scared. Is the only way to reinstall and start over?

yeah... and even more like an idiot i rebooted only to get the same thing. Now "last good configureaton" is shot. Anything i can do with the revovery console? Would a repair installation fix it? Also, if i did a repair installation, what would be effected? Would i have to reinstall any programs or drivers again? Sorry for being so clueless but i can't really do anything right now... all of windows has turned pitch black >_<

This website has a link to how to change to the new patched uxtheme.dll for SP1, (you probably installed the one for XP without SP1).

You didn't backup the old uxtheme.dll file?

Edit: You might have a copy of that dll in \Windows\ServicePackFiles\i386 folder.

oh, i have a backup but it won't let me overwrite the old one with it even in safe mode.... i'd tell you what error message it's giving me but both the text and the backround it's on are black, even in safe mode

Boot off the CD and use the recovery console. You should be able to overwrite the bad file with your backup then.
