I went in and got my schedule for high school today and there are a few problems with it. because of schedule conflicts I have a number of choices (none of which are what I was planning on originally). I wanted to take ap english, ap psychology, ap physics b, and ap calculus bc but the last three of those classes are taught first period only so my choices are:

[1]
ap english
ap calculus bc

[2]
ap english
ap calculus ab
ap psychology

[3]
ap english
ap calculus ab
ap physics b

I could possibly take some related non-ap classes (advanced pyschology, physics honors) but I'm not sure that I want to. I have art classes and some other stuff to fill in the blanks with. I know no one really cares but just in case anyone is bored, some advice would be appreciated. the reason I want to take ap psychology is because I'm interested in the field. the reason for the other classes is mostly to fulfill GE requirements.

I also need a PE credit and I'm trying to decide between body conditioning, lifetime activities (your typical PE class), and .. yoga.

thanks.

choose according to what you're shooting for in college obviously.

If you're going into engineering something don't take ap psych, etc.

I'm interested in psychology. I don't know that I want to do it as a career yet (which is why I want to take the class) but I don't really have any other interests at the moment (computers got boring).

Are you already going to be accepted into the college of your choice? Otherwise if you're going to apply for a college say under engineering ap physics would look better on your transcript versus ap psychology.

If you're guaranteed into the college of your choice then take what interests you.

option 1, 2 if you can handle it

//edit//

option 1 will put you farther ahead math wise, option 2 will probably be a little bit easier (psych is a freaking joke)

I would take #3. AP Physics was fun in my HS. Much better tought then in my college. It is probably a small class compared to college as well.

Same here, so I have decided on a dual major in Psych and CIS. As of right now I am planning on doing research in Cognitive Science.

Also, double check to make sure your college will give you AP credit if you pass the test for those classes. AP Physics credit is hard to get at many schools.

I know option 1 will put me farther ahead in math but at some of the colleges I've looked at, a 4 or 5 on the ab exam is all the math that is required (assuming I don't go into anything math-related of course). I took ap stats last year also. I'd like to go with option 3 so I don't have to take physics in college (again, depending on the college I go to and assuming I don't go into anything physics-related) but I'd like to go with option 2 so I have some idea as to what I'm going to do in college. I have a lot of my GEs taken care of so I should be able to start working on my major right away.

You've never had any calculus before? And you could be put into Calc BC? How does that work?

umm .. I don't know but it works.

EDIT: just in case you didn't know, calc bc isn't supposed to come after ab. bc covers everything ab does and then some. I took pre-calc honors last year.

the 2 option is best for prepping for college.
remember you are tyring to get a broad based education, not just a piece of sheepskin that will land you a job.
as for the p.e. class, go with body conditioning (weights, if available). Pumping iron is a good way to break up
the study grind....

the ap physics b test is pretty useless - there are not to many schools that will take credit for the test. in fact, i dont know of any off the top of my head. physics c on the other hand - that will give you credit.

ap psyc might be the same thing too - the first option looks to be your best bet in terms of college credit -> at JHU for example, a good score on calc BC will give you 8 credits (calc 1+2), ab will give you 4 (calc 1).

i suggest option 1, and then enrolling in an extra class at your local community college. you can take psyc or even physics and then transfer the credits over to your future university.

i was placed into a similar situation last year and took classes at the community college in addition to the HS classes

Yeah, you really want to take AP Physics C if you can. B is pointless as hardly any schools even recognize it.

Oh, I suggest option 1. It's really nice to get those first two semesters of calculus out of the way before college.

physics c isn't available at my school. I'm not really concerned about ap psych counting towards college. I'm mostly taking it to get a taste of .. psychology.

the girls at my school are too stupid to be interested in psychology.

what college are you aiming for?
In my senior year, I only took five classes and one of them was ceramics, I had a blast.
If you are not aiming high, just take option 1.
I prefer taking math class in high school than in college.
The HS teacher will go slower so you can understand better.
BC is a lot better than AB.

OHHH. At my school we were required to take AB before BC. Although... we learned what was on the BC test 2nd semester of AB. So what we called calc BC was actually 3rd semester calc...

Calc AB != BC

Maybe in your school they do some remedial stuff in BC to refresh your memory of AB, but it definitely should be taught in AB -> BC order, without skipping. You really need to take the time in AB to learn the basics of derivation and integration before you can move on to real calculus.

well I guess they cram it all together in the bc class at my school. my brother took it two years ago and passed the test with a 5. my school combines ap english language and literature also (I know at least some other schools teach them separately).

The AP test for BC is cake.

You don't even need to take BC if you don't plan on doing something in math/engineering/physics.

I'd go with plan 3. You get your AP english which will pimp you for gen-ed writing. You get your AP calc for your gen-ed math. You get AP physics for your gen-ed science.

If you're going to major in psychology, don't waste your time with the AP class in high school. You'll end up just doing the same work over again, and it's best to learn the stuff first on a college level.
