the master bedroom closet in my house SUCKS.... Here is what it's shaped like:

http://pics.bbzzdd.com/users/cheesy/closet.jpg

the white things are those metal wire shelf things... basically your clothes hang on the edge.

The right side that goes back is practically impossible to use. There's only like maybe 2 feet of room in front of the shelves - so when clothes are hanging there you can 'barely' squeeze by..

solution?

The top left part... what keeps the closet from being huge and square... is the closet to an adjoining room. To knock down the walls would mean the other room has no closet - thus isn't considered a bedroom if I need to sell the house - only a bonus room.

Turn the thing on the right so it's horizontal in the pic, and make it two levels so you have about the same amount of hanger space. Then you'll also have room behind it for long-term storage.

hm... I've already bought enough wire shelving to make both wire shelves 2 levels..

K, I think you are going at it wrong.

The wire shelving sucks because you can't make it any shorter (in terms of distance it comes out from the wall).

Use the wire shelving to make about 3 or 4 shelves in the back corner of the closet... although some simple wood shelves would be better as you could make them come out about 2 feet. This would be great for shoes or shirts or things that can be folded... or just general crap that you insist on putting in the closet that really has no other place.

On the walls, get either a bar to hang things on (two would easily fit) and either run it about a foot out, or, better yet, make bars PERPINDICULAR to the wall... again, you could fit two rows of them, probably 2 or 3 each row, and you can do the same on the remainder of the 56in wall. If you only put them out as far as a foot, then unless you have a crapload of clothes, you have plenty of room.

You might even be able to get by with the perpindicular bars on the 56in wall, and the shelving on the 46in one, which would give you plenty of space to get by.

Whoever designed that closet needs to be kicked square in the nuts. I used to have a friend with a closet in similar design, except it was a hinged door at the left of where your door is, and in the back of the "arm" of the closet was another turn. Why the hell wouldn't you just make it a walk-in?

hmm.. The house has plenty of closet space elsewhere... there's really nothing but clothes/boxers/socks in the closet... maybe 5 pairs of shoes

Draw in the adjoining closet on the original diagram.

that would leave the other bedroom without a closet... thus no longer a bedroom... the house would be 3br/3ba with a 'bonus room'.. rather than 4br..

Well look, how can I help if you're not gonna cooperate? Now upload a picture with the other closet drawn in :p

Also, is the thicker blue at the bottom the entry? Double sliding door?

it's two 'bi-fold' doors...

seriously... the empty space is the closet for the adjacent room...
