Help me fix a friend's system, please!

I don't usually need advice on fixing computers, I've pretty much seen everything, but there's a first time for everything I guess.

Here's the skinny...

Some friends of my wife's family have this computer with a 2gb hard drive. It was full, so they compressed it. Now some funky stuff is happening with it, and I think it might be the drive starting to fail. I want to unload the 2gb onto an 8gb drive I have.

I put both drives in my computer on IDE2 and tried to copy all the contents of the 2gb onto the 8gb, but I can't copy the Windows directory, which I half expected anyway.

What's the best way to replicate an entire drive onto another? Ghost maybe? Keep in mind that it's compressed.

If you know the manufacturer of at least one of the drives, then you should be able to go to their website and download a utility that will do a complete disk to disk duplication of the old drive. I have used the utilities of IBM, Maxtor, and Western Digital with success.
