Here is the scenario:
1 Company, 2 IT Guys, 400+ employees

We have been using Access for Inventory and Audit Wizard for asset discovery and auditing. We are looking for something with the following features:

Web Based
Asset Tracking over VPN and Internet
Asset Discovery
Inventory, Item assignment (one person, multiple items; not one item, multiple owners)
VNC integration (optional)
Help Desk (optional)

I've must of looked at tens of them, but nothing with what we are looking for. Help me find it please!!! Many thanks.

If you have any software engineering talents and use a windows domain controller, use visual studio c# and WMI. You can scan the pdc for a list of all computers, then scan all of the hosts for dell service tag, harddrive space, installed applications, ram, etc etc. Then output your results into a nice friendly readable format. That would cover

Web Based
Asset Tracking over VPN and Internet
Asset Discovery

and I'm sure you could always integrate some sort of terminal services work into the app instead of VNC.

Even if you don't have much in the way of software engineering, you could try out the Clarion IDE. I could cook up an inventory program in an hour with that, and that's with polish. In my first 2 weeks I had made 3 programs, it's real easy to use as it is template driven and focuses on database browsing programs for businesses.

Eracent
Centennial Data
Scalable Software
S....something, can't remember the name, started with S
Landesk/Altiris/SMS (didn't like them much at all)

Thanks nweaver for the suggestions. I took a look at them, but wasn't fully satisfied with any.

As far as making my own is concerned, I don't think that it will come out with a tenth of the features that I'd like. I want something I can just install and have it work.

Keep the suggestions coming. Thanks!
