here's what i'm looking for:

- uses compact flash and has microdrive support (no sony, since htey only use memory sticks :disgust: )
- has 4x optical zoom or greater
- 3 megapixels or greater
- very small delay between taking shots. i'm not sure what this is called, but i hate having to wait for the camera to save a picture before i take another.

The newish Minolta DiMAGE 5 (3.31MP) and 7 (5.2MP) are very nice, I had a look at them at the camera store when I bought mine.

The DiMAGE 5 has a 4x optical zoon lens, and the DiMAGE 7 has a 7x optical zoom lenses. If you are used to a SLR type camera, then these tend to fit your hand better than some of the cheaper models.

In short, they are a lot of camera for the money (Prices here.) and you can find some reviews of them here.

Huh? The DiMAGE models look like SLRs but that big honkin lense isn't interchangeable like a true digital SLR (which are $$$). If I didn't get a smoking deal on the POS that I bought, I would have jumped on the DiMAGE 5 in a second.

hehe, what's the POS you bought? i got a casio qv2000uv... it's decent, but i need more power! :D

have you tried the dimages? how is the image quality? i've heard they have 2 major problems, image quality and battery consumption... batteries are not really a concern since i have a ton of nimh batteries anyways, but the image quality stuff concerns me. here are the negative reviews i'm talking about.

I bought a Kodak DX3900. It's 3MP, but the image quality leaves a bit to be desired. I haven't tried it outdoors yet, but indoors it is strictly middle of the road.

I played around with the DiMAGE 5 at the local shop, and it seemed to work pretty good, and the image quality was pretty good (although the shop had amazing lighting). Just cruise down to your local store and ask to have a look at one. I'm sure they won't object.
