My chipset fan just went out and i think that it is now the cause of random reboots and crashes. I would like to replace the cooler with something better because i do overclock my system.

I am currently looking at vantec's chipset cooler and thermaltakes crystal orb.

First I would like to know if anyone has any experience putting these on a MSI Ultra 845 motherboard

Secondly I am also open to any other coolers that may get the job done.

thanks

i'm a big fan of the Zalman passive chipset HS. however, i wouldn't conisder it to be "performance cooling". but if you ever give up OC'ing, i recommend it. besides that, i've found that fans small enough to fit on a NorthBridge and that deliver good cooling have to be really fast for their size which is really loud. if you're concerned about noise, don't get a very fast fan.

The Zalmans do an excellent job, particularly when the chip is located in the airflow coming from the hsf on the cpu. Looks like that's the case with your MSI.

Don't buy into the marketing hype about chipset fans, they're bunk. For every board that has one, there's another board that will clock just as high using the same chipset and a half-assed decent passive sink....

The most noticeable effect of having the chipset fan die is that the machine's a lot quieter. Given the miserable thermal interface methods used on most stock chipset sinks, I strongly suspect that most of the heat dissipation occurs through the mobo traces, anyway......
