So I'm not sure how to describe this music, except it's the solemn, peaceful, ambient type of music that the movie plays when the hero dies. A lot of times it involves vocals too...

Here's a good example from Black Hawk Down:

Also, if you've heard the Bridge of Khazad-dum, the last 30 seconds of that sequence, where the Fellowship rushes out of the mountain after Gandalf dies, with the vocals and flute and the underlying bass, that's exactly the kind of stuff I'm looking for!

EDIT: I FOUND IT!!!

Starts around 5:20 of this movie: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rJZ-STX0x0c

Appealing to ATOT's apparent extensive knowledge of music lol.....

Tyler bates does the 300 OST, could check him out.
Hans Zimmer does similar work. Danny Elfman does some of the Spiderman stuff. Martin O'Donnell has the new Halo 3 single out, which is pretty cool. And as jacob0401 said, Clint Mansell is good too.

As for bands..Enigma could be one to look at.

Yup!

I've got some stuff from Enigma (Return to Innocence, Goodbye Milky Way) and some pretty good stuff from Explosions in the Sky too. But nobody really writes that much choral-ish music.

I've also got Howard Shore on the short-list. Hans Zimmer is actually the composer for the first track from Black Hawk Down. I'll be sure to check the other ones though.

Any input from the day crowd?

Wow.. these are great suggestions so far... any more? I've heard Requiem of Dream (like everybody else who have ever seen a movie trailer =).

Also, I wish there was some place where I could just input a song I like and have it spit back out some stuff that's similar. Like Pandora, except I don't know how well it works with this kind of stuff.
