Help me find furniture...

Here's an odd one but I'm not having any luck on my own, so here goes.

I'm looking for a wall unit / bookshelf combo. The catch is, I want to spend < $1000 on it. I am looking for something sort of IKEA-esque, but of decent (not great) quality. The ones I like I keep finding in 'european' furniture stores and they want an arm and a leg.

This is approximately what I'm looking for. Unfortunately, this particular set is $2000+ and it isn't quite right either. I have to get something that will let me wall-mount a 50" TV in the middle. This will probably involve some cutting and rearranging, but I'm ok with that.

Anyway I figured I'd ask if anyone has suggestions. I have found a couple things online and a couple locally, but for one reason or another they never pan out. I like the one above because the whole set is made of 1.5 - 2" thick (fake) wood beams... I managed to find one locally that was very similar for 1/3 the cost, but it had been discontinued by the manufacturer and they couldn't order more...

$10 reward if I actually end up buying anybody's suggestion!

IMHO it sounds like you're working against yourself here.

Wall unit advantage for LCD/plasma: Put the plasma on a stand and be done with installation and hiding wires; don't have to mount into wall or hide wires in the wall
Wall mount advantage for LCD/plasma: Don't have to buy a wall unit to display it.

Also won't you be cutting down the viewable angle in the room by having the TV 1.5-2 deep in a wall unit?

You do have a good point. My first choice was to find a buffet / low plasma stand - something approximately 60-80" wide, 2' deep, and 2-4' tall - then simply mount the plasma above it. However, I ran into the same situation - difficult to find something like that which I like, that is under $1500. In the wall unit category, really what I'm thinking is I will take the typical wall unit w/bridge that normally goes ABOVE the TV, and turn that into a shelf that will go below the TV...

In my room, having the TV recessed won't have any ill effects...

In the single-piece-of-furniture category, I was looking at this but again, I can't justify the $$ for a single piece...

Doh. More than I'd like to spend, but the picture mislead me - the center piece in that set is only 51" wide - I'm looking for more like 60-70" for that part. (the TV itself is somewhere around 50-52")

that will be difficult...most entertainment centers like that are designed around standard sizes, and TVs that large aren't usually put in a piece like that. You have 2 opitons: A buffet-type stand witha wall mount TV, or build your own from scratch or using modular pieces

I know. Definitely open to suggestions for buffet-style stands as well. Same criteria - looking for simple, modern lines - which I don't want to spend a fortune for. For something like that I would perfer to be in the 70-80" wide range... again I can find plenty of pieces that I like for $1200-1400... cheaper than that is turning out to be very difficult.

I ended up leaning towards the wall units because I was finding that a cheap but decently looking wall unit / modular set would cost about the same price as a nice buffet/sofa table type piece...

In the buffet arena, things I like are the dania flamenco sideboard (although it looks sort of like a desk) and the Sanus java lowboy - although the latter is again just too pricey for what you get...
