Help me find a subwoofer for my setup... Polk Audio Monitor 70 fronts

Hey guys. So Santa brought me a pair of Polk Audio Monitor 70 tower speakers, as well as their matching center channel, the CS2. I'd like to get some more deep rumble for movies. For music, just the tower speakers are good enough.

I'm thinking about the Parts Express SUB-1500, which seems to be the 15 inch version of their popular SUB-1200. While the SUB-1200 is highly reviewed, considering its price, the SUB-1500 has basically no reviews available anywhere. Going by the reputation of its smaller sibling, I'd assume that this is a good choice.

What else would you recommend?

How big is the room you want to feel with bass? My living room has an open dining room and open kitchen, so it makes it hard to fill the areas that I want with bass. How much do you want to spend? Obviously, the more you spend the better equipment you will get.

For 300$ range, I've read that BIC PL-200 does a good job. Try this thread, post 244. It gave me a good insight to my decision. I got the SVS PB1000 for 500$ because it had such a good warranty. It sounds really good too, especially for my awkward designed living room.

It's about 800 sq ft worth of open-concept living room, dining, and kitchen. My ceilings are flat and 8 feet tall.

That thread seems to be a good starting point, but the prices are very outdated. I'll have to go through it, comparing each sub one by one. But still, good resource.

For $200 the BiC F12 is my pick, have one and it's awesome for movies and games. It'll get deep and rumble.

But Polk subs generally aren't that good for the price, a HSU STF-1 would be a better option IMO.

Completely agreed. The Polk is a $200 sub, it goes on sale for that price all the time. I'd still take the BiC over the Polk, their subs just aren't that good. I have a complete Polk system, except for the sub.

Budget is $200, but up to $300 if it's absolutely worth it. So far, I have my eyes on the BIC F12...

Good idea, however I don't really have the tools or the time to do something like that. My home is still a project, so I'd like to spend my time there.

I'm glad I started this thread. I was originally going to buy a Polk Audio PSW505, but it looks like the BIC America F12 is the way to go, as some of you have recommended. I think this is the one for me!

Thanks, all. :)

Subs are the most important.

Important to who? Who does like ghetto sound?

What about mids, highs? bass - for drums/bass, don't you want to hear guitars, voices, violins?

OP would get a good sound with speakers he has - Polk Audio Monitor 70 - there are plenty of bass. I do have Polk Audio Monitor 50 and I did set on my Yamaha AVR - "no sub"/"extra bass" and I get very good sound - soft bass - my preference and I hear other instruments, vocals very good too...

This, exactly. I only want the sub for movies.

Sure, when you are old and can't hear a lick anymore.

I needed big subs because they are in an 8000 cu ft room. I wasn't happy with the single 12" (klipsch sub12) I had in the room. They are really not overwhelming.

Subs are extremely important in both a musical but more importantly in a home theater system. In HT most want to feel the boom of the explosions, hear and feel the thunder rip. In music having a good sub takes the load off the main speakers. Also higher end subs are going to sound a lot better with much cleaner sound. You can get away with a cheaper sub for HT than you can for a musical set-up. Room size plays a huge role here as well.

As long as the crossover point is configured correctly you will be fine with more sub than you need. A good rule of thumb is you should go toward the too much scale rather than the not enough scale. Similar to TVs, the usual complaint is "I should have went a little bigger".

My pair of DIY dual opposed 15's match my Monitor 70s quite well in my theater. They really do well with the subsonic bass that's in quite a few movies. I find the 70s bass to be pretty good for most music when fed with 250w, only use the subs for movies or cranking some dub step.
