Help me find a spider...............

OK, so I was bringing the trash cans back in last night and I noticed this beautiful (if a spider can be beautiful) spider on the sidewalk.

It had red legs (kinda' "rosie red") and a grey body. Its spread was about as big as a penny, no bigger than a nickel. Pretty uniform in shape. Nothing unusual. Oval back, nothing portruding from the head. Normal proportions, etc. I have NEVER seen a spider like it before.

I immediately grabbed my camera to take a pic of it but when I came back it was gone. It was only inches from the grass so it probably got in there & disappeared.

Can anybody point to what it might have been??? (I Yahoo'd but didn't come up w/ any pics that it looked like). This is in Southern California, so a U.S. spider.

TIA!!!

That would be a Dysdera crocota (pill bug eater)

That thing is an ALIEN!!!! CALL ET!!!

Not Alien, just a spider I found in my kitchen sink. I caught her and let her go outside (AFTER snapping some cool pics!)

Wow!! That's amazing you got that!! Sorry it took me so long, I got so busy at work, I forgot I had posted this morning from home........(doh!).

After reading back over my post I thought...."Now who the heck's gonna guess from the millions of spiders what kind THAT is??".

Sorry I don't have a prize for ya', but that sure is cool that you nailed it!!!

And, yes, if that sucker doesn't catch your attention.......(I literally stopped in my tracks when I saw it in my yard).........then NOTHIN' will!!!

Cool - glad it was identified! Actually, I just got lucky. When I found the one in the picture I posted above in my sink, I had NO CLUE what kind it was (just thought it looked cool!) I posted the pics and asked an entomoligist on the James Randi Educational Foundation (JREF) forums. "Buggirl", as she is known, is the one who identified it.

Truth be told, it was your excellent description that made me think "that sounds just like the one I found". 🙂
