Help me find a Digital Camera Please

Thanks for looking. I am trying to decide on a digital camera.

My wife (and our current financial situation) puts the limit at $200 tops and cheaper is better.

I am looking for ones that will take a SD card so we can use our existing 256MB card.

I don't want to buy crap again. Last time I didn't look around and bought a 2 MP HP Photosmart that was total junk.

I almost thought the Canon A520 at Circuit City last night ($179 right now) but held off and decided to ask here before I did.

Any ideas, models, comments? I am no camera snob, so I'll buy whatever is the best bang for the buck. But I do really like the idea of the point-and-shoot with advanced, almost SLR, options on the A520.

So fire away and thanks again for your help with this...

The A520 is GREAT for the price. My wife bought me one off of newegg.com last September for my birthday, and we love it. It doesn't have the greatest battery life in the world, but just invest in some good rechargeables or just buy good batteries, and it won't be as big of a pain.

I've been out of the loop as far as cameras go since we got the A520, maybe Fuji or someone has a good model now, I'm sure somebody else can comment.

I've got an older Cannon A300(discontinued) and like it quite well. If the feature set on the A520 is better than the one I have, I'd say jump on it. Cannon is a good brand, and don't fool around with their cameras, and for $180 that's not a bad price either.

I think mine was like $200 3 or more years ago. I'm still using it today.

Thanks. If it helps at all I do have four 2300Mh NIMH rechargeables and a 15 minute charger. That was a must a year ago because the HP Photosmart we bought is a complete beast with batteries (goes though them in about 30 shots and will not work if the batteries get below about 70% charged)

Yeah, the Photosmarts are garbage. Don't worry, the battery life of the A520 is better. I guess some more expensive models have on-board nuclear reactors and can take hundreds of shots, but the A520 isn't annoyingly awful with battery life.

Yeah the A510/A520 are great cameras. I bought one for my dad for his birthday last year, and he ended up buying one for my sister for her birthday a few months later. For the price, they are very solid cameras. I'd check slickdeals or fatwallet because I'm sure you could find a good deal going on for them online. If you don't mind buying used I'd suggest the FS forum on here. Best of luck to you.

hard to find in-stock at $200... but if you do, I'll take 10!

I've used the a520 that I purchased for someone else (~$135 from OD, w/rebate/coupon deal about 6months ago) and it's very nice.
I'd consider buying one for myself if I could ever get a deal again.

Battery life is pretty disappointing, so figure buying $25 worth of rechargables/recharger.

The camera has plenty of features to keep you busy, and an auto mode for when you just want a quick pic.

Sounds good then. I have the 4 AA's and the 15 minute charger so I;m hoping to be OK in that area. I'll pick up the A520 from CC this weekend and try to post some pics. Thanks for everyones help.

The Canon will be an excellent camera. Fuji also has some nice cameras in that range, but they use xD and not SD, so they're out. I would jump on that Canon deal.

Four years ain't even broken in for a camera. :p My SLR's are 20+ years old and still chugging. Of course, when it's all mechanical there's not much to break. ;)

RossMAN: It is $179 @ CC )free S&H + tax but I plan to pickup) but I am hoping to get a 10% or 15% off coupon to sweeten that deal a bit

Personally, I've been debating between the A520 and Sony DSC-S90. Based on the great reviews of the S90, i'm leaning towards that one.

I have an A510 as my back-up to my EOS-20D. It's nice, but it has TERRIBLE write speeds to the SD card.
