I went to CompUSA tonight and looked at their monitors.. how disappointing! The best they had was a Sony 440something that only did 1600x1200@65Hz, and it was $400. Are there any flat screen monitors for less than $300 that will do 16x12@85?

It seems that all the good 19 inchers are way too expensive, approaching the price of a good 17 or 18" LCD :(.

My Samsung 900NF does 1600x1200 @85Hz. Not sure what the current model numbers and prices are but I'm pretty sure it'd be cheaper than the Sony. Fine montior too.

Compaq p910, Diamondtron. Should be $200 shipped if you can find it. Been out of production for a couple months.

Some 900nf customer reviews...

This monitor has to have the worst case of geometry problems I have ever seen. Sure, the advanced controls will let you square the image perfectly to the bezel, but at the cost of grossly distorting the image. Even when I tried to get a uniform image by letting the sides freely distort, it still didn't help. At my 900NF's best, screen images along the top curve up 1/ 4" and left side images bend to the left enough to be irritating. Other minor imperfections include the lower left corner which is out of focus and miscovergence that abounds throughout the display. Sad thing is that if this monitor had been built with a bit of care it would be a great unit. The controls are advanced enough for most users, and the .25AG display is sharp and crisp...despite the distortion. If you still aren't convinced to buy another model/brand, just make sure a liberal return policy comes with your purchase.

If you'll watch Dell Home (or sometimes Small Business) VERY closely, you can sometimes get a Sony G420 for under $300 (they're normally around $400).... especially if you can get your hands on a good coupon or two. I bought one recently, and I've been VERY VERY pleased with it.

For a monitor ACTUALLY priced below $300... I also have a Samsung 955... and its great for the money. Personally, if you have a little time to wait, I would fork over a tiny bit more cash and see if you can get one of the Sonys (G410 or G420--they're wonderful).... but my Samsung works wonderfully for the cash outlay on my 2nd computer.

Best of luck!

I'll scream if someone doesn't answer me this time. :|

Why doesn't anyone give the CTX-PR960f a mention cause I've seen it in best buy section in alot of computer magazines, please, with cherry on top?

I bought this Orion monitor at Sams Club a couple months ago for $140, last one, and it has worked great so far. It can do 1600x1200 at 75hz and I believe it uses a Samsung tube, though I'm not sure about that.

Tom's Hardware says that there are geometry problems at resolutions higher than 1280x1024 :(.

Yeah; what he said,{Jellomancer} samsung looks good too. BTW the price at best buy
for the Magvision may look tempting but DON'T go there!!! I had one
self destruct just days after warranty expire.

Staring at one right now that's running fine at 1600x1200 at 85Hz. I'm QUITE funny about monitors--hence this Sony. I encourage ANYONE to seriously examine their monitor and learn how to adjust it--and RMA it if its not up to snuff. Its what you stare at ALL DAY--spend money and expect performance.

But it won't do 1600x1200 at 85hz :(.

These damn sites are pissing me off. They don't list refresh rates for each resolution, only the max. :|:|:|:|:|

I have a CTX PR960F which does 1600x1200@85Hz. It's a decent monitor, BUT I find it takes the monitor some warm-up time for the monitor to display sharp text. But once it has warmed up, it has really good quality.

I have an older SONY G400 which does 1600*1200 at 85Hz.. the new models (G410-420) should as well; it's a great screen. If I wouldn't have this one, I'd get comparable Samsung...
