He says in autocad and land desktop he is always locking up the comps at work (1000$ dell deals type comps). All bought within the last month , he says theyre better than the old ones but still cant handle his apps.

He likes my new comp I built and wants me to make him one for @ home.

Ok, could you explain why hed need to be computer literate to use a home built, as opposed to a dell? My dell had ten times more probs / black screens freeze ups lock ups/blue screens. My home built only had the occasional blue screen If I pushed it too hard.

because WHEN he messes it up (its only a matter of time) he calls you instead of dell. sure, maybe the first time doesnt seem bad, but when he calls you every other week, you will wish you had gotten him a dell

Lol , yeah youre right.

What would he need in a Dell? Question remains the same?
At work his dells arent cutting it, not sure what they have in them but he says his boss got a package deal including screens for about 1150 a piece .

Back to the question pls 🙂 Although I do appreciate your advice and will have him get a dell or other prefab with support other than me.

get a dell with similar components as yours and a 2 year warranty. i mean hell they let you pick the components you put in it.

if he only does that work stuff on this computer, get a cad card instead of a gaming card.

You realize of course that, if he does get a Dell, and has trouble, who's he going to call - some tech who might speak English, and will read to him out of a book, or his brother, who he knows will probably be able to fix the problem, and not just have him format the drive?

Once word is out that you're good with computers, everyone latches onto you, trying to drain you of all knowledge until you're dead. Then at your funeral, they'll be praying to you, asking for advice on the spyware on their computer.......

But anyway...the computer. Hm, well, afraid I can't give a lot of info there. 😱
Good CPU, maybe 1GB of RAM for AutoCAD to live off of; don't know much about that group of apps there though.

I doubt lack of computing power is causing his lock-ups.
That is more likely a sign of poor configuration.
Use WindowsXP and don't get cute with the installation.
If he is short on RAM he might hit virtual memory
which can make a computer appear to be locked up.

He needs lots of RAM (1GB) and a nice video card... Nvidia FX5900 or better or ATI 9800 or better)

He needs a good CPU and memory, but nothing exotic. P4 2.8 or better or AMD 2800+ or better.

Finally, a good monitor. I prefer CRT

PS: nothing wrong with a Dell. It just has to be maintained.
