"He who would give up liberty for security deserves neither"

it is something like that... i searched for "deserves neither" ben
franklin
in google and i get no less than 93849 different
variations of this one god damn quote. what is the correct wording,
and is it even by ben franklin?

I think that I am wrong. M4H sounds right.

"They who would give up an essential liberty for temporary security, deserve neither
liberty or security."

"Those who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety."

Edit - Second quote added. Not sure which is right, but I think it's the first one.

BTW, you suck at teh Google. ;)

Bartlett's Familiar Quotations

thanks, that looks like a reliable source

Bartlett's is THE source for quotes, and has been for years.
It is really easier now that they are on line.
I thought everyone grew up using it as a refrence in reports.
Guess not.

I thought that I had heard somewhere that this was a misquote, that BF never actually said it. Guess I was wrong if Bartlett's has it.
