DVD-R is much more compatible with older dvd players. DVD+R is only just starting to take hold in consumer dvd players. Most DVD burners you get can do both now. I've got the Pioneer 105, which is only -R, but the 106 does both now, and is pretty reasonable. Not a coaster yet, and I use generic media (touch wood)

Forget RAM. As for + or -.....flip a coin. Seriously. Either one has just as much chance of being compatible with your player, and both will be obsolete technology in less than 5 years. You should be able to pick one up for less than $100 new. Or get a dual format burner, they can be had for less than $150 new. + discs tend to cost more. However, I buy + discs and I have yet to pay over $1 per disc...you just have to watch the Sunday paper and pickup the deals as they come along.

Look up what players your family members have and whether they have more compatibility with +R or -R

Yeah I don't think there is a huge price difference. We have recently been having some troubles with +R media being read on older DVD-ROM's
