Help me do direct connect with AIM.

For some reason, I can't do direct connect with AIM. I used to be able to, but now I can't. Even after a clean format, I can't. My school has no firewalls. And my roommate can connect to others with AIM. The school doesn't block any ports, so what's wrong?
 
yup i am, nintendo. my "internet connection firewall" for XP is off. or is there something else you may be pointing out?

I was first going to point out the firewall, but that you have already taken care of. Are you by chance running ZoneAlarm or behind a router at all? Are you even able to direct connect with you roommate?

 
well i was running sygate, but that's not the problem cuz i've tried connecting with it off. now im using zone alarm just cuz i felt like switching firewalls. i'm running through the school proxy, so is my roomie. We can connect to each other, but only he can connect to people off campus.
 
school claims they dont block ports for any individual IP address.

i am wondering, would changing my nic change my ip addresS?
