Help me disspell these racist ideas...

I am not a racist at all, but I'd like to know the origins of these racist ideas / slogans / etc.... Most of these I've heard from the media, or... gulp, my family.

1. Many black people are afraid of dead people. I was telling a family member about how I was at a funeral a couple weeks ago, all of the black people sat in the back and didn't look at the open casket body. My family member told me this was common... they don't like funerals and almost never have open casket funerals.

2. Many black people come are afraid of the water and can't swim well at all. ?? I assume the can't swim well thing comes from the fact that they don't like water.

3. Black people have extra/different muscles in their calves that enables them to jump higher / run faster. My [black] African-American studies teacher told me this is a myth.

4. Black people have large penises. I remember watching some sex tv show a while ago that said black penises are on average, .25" longer than white males. .25" is about the length of a pencil eraser (not the long, aftermarket add-on erasers either). I have spoken to more than one white female in my time who only date black people because.... and I quote... "they get all up in you, they are so much bigger than white guys." The girl was about 23 or 24.

5. WOP ... italian WOPs. I'm under the assumption that WOP stands for with out papers. Where does this come from and does it still offend italians today?

6. Guido ... another italian thing. I am dark complected, you've all seen my pics. A guy in the food court at the mall was openly staring at my girlfriend once and I made a funny face at him. He was throwing his food away and when he walked by me he said "Fvcking guido." I said "I always wanted to be Italian!". Is guido an offensive term?

7. beautiful ray of sunshine... this is... because Mexicans backs are wet from swimming the rio grande or because they sweat a lot???? Or something different? I sweat a lot, and once again, am dark complected so my brother always calls me a beautiful ray of sunshine.

8. I'm under the assumption that middle eastern / Indian people own many hotels and gas stations per capita. Do they? And why?

9. And yes, I am also under the assumption that black people commit more crimes per capita that other races so I feel *less* comfortable in certain situations (in the city, at night, on the streets) than other races. Is this because of racist police or do they truly, legitimately commit more crimes per capita and therefore do pose a higher % risk of commiting a crime in certain situations versus other races.


These are pretty much the only things I need help finding truths about, but I'll try to think of more.

Never having seen any statistics, I wouls say that there are an inordinate amount of ME/Indians who work in the services industry. Not sure quite why - I think it has something to do with the direct money-making mindset of those areas.

WOP does stand for with out papers, and I believe is a reference to being illegal. I would guess it has as much potential to offend as any other racially motivated, derogatory term ('n1gger' 'beloved patriot' etc...) none of them are acceptable in anything like polite company, and none are necessary.

As far as specific roots for WOP I don't know.

Not knowing how to swim is, for black (and many other communities) a result of fear of water, not a cause.

SOME black people have tall, muscular genetic heritage. They are disproportionately tremendous athletes; other blacks come from different genetic backgrounds and are actually quite diminutive; it all depends on what part of the world they originally came from. I don't know of any races with 'extra' muscles though... I think your teacher is right on this one.

The crime thing has a million causes; from the police, to the black people themselves, to the economy, to the population at large... blaming one cause exclusively would guarantee never solving the problem.

2. No idea from where that originates, but I live at the beach, and I honestly only see black people fully clothed at the beach, with a rare exception of someone who has grown up at the beach. I'm guessing it's a matter of never swimming.
3. Sounds like white people making an excuse for the talent of black athletes.
4. That girl is a whore, stay away from her crotch at all costs. Apparently there is a slight average size difference according to almost everything I've read.
5. WOP is an immigrant insult. It's only still offensive because of the history.

First off, let's look at the social situation of the black ppl in question. I'm sure the average income of african americans is much lower than the average income of white america, thus accounting for hte increase in crime. Perhaps it would be more fair to compare a black family that had a family income of $80,000/year vs a white family who made $80,000/year. I bet most of the disparity in crime rates would be gone.


Oh, and about the black athlete thing, assuming that the majority of the black ppl were brought to America to be slaves, perhaps the largest and strongest slaves were more desirable, and more likely to live. Kind of a selective breeding, as offensive as that might sound, might have taken place.

It was always my assumption that because most black people today live in larger citites and not near water that they are not accomplished swimmers. This has almost exclusively been the case on all the survivor reality shows..

It isnt because they dont like water, its just because they dont always have ready access to it.

hahaha not exactly.. just embarrassingly bad shower facilities at my high school gym, and first year residence... I haven't seen another penis in 3 years

That made me laugh out loud at work. My co-worker came over to see what I was laughing at--I had to minimize internet explorer because I'm a guy and I shouldn't be reading anything with penis in it.

I dunno...black people own on the basketball court and running...but I can't think of any olympic swimmers I've seen that were black. I don't really follow that sport much though, I could be wrong.

as my age climbs higher and higher above 18... I'm becoming more and more sure I won't be one of the whatever percent of hetero males to have a gay experience... you ever have a friend realize he isn't gay after-all? Talk about a crash-and-burn...

And do they own these sports because of genetic superiority? Or is it because they are in many situations requiring them to run and are raised playing basketball in the cities often. I wonder if most black runners/basketball players are from suburbs or the city. Hmmm

The belief that blacks are more athletic may have something to do with the way they were brought to this country: as slaves. Now if you're going to purchase someone to work in your fields and whatnot you sure as hell aren't going to buy the fat, asthmatic lardball who looks 2 steps away from a heart attack. You're going to buy the folks who can work. Slavery effectively brought about a form of eugenics and controlled breeding, as I doubt very few out of shape slaves ever were given the chance to reproduce. More than likely a large percentage of them were simply killed. Thusly, when slavery was finally abolished the black population in the country was stronger and more athletic, on average.

Are blacks as a race more athletic than other races? Doubtful. Are the blacks in this country more athletic than other races in this country? Yes. (at least at one time they were)
