My self-assembled PC suddenly stopped booting lately. I have been using it for about two years. Initially, it would stop booting half of the time, then it just stopped working.
The motherboard is an ASUS M4A78-EM AM3/AM2+/AM2 780G HDMI Micro ATX board.
I did the following:
1. Unplugged everything except the PSU, and tried to boot - not working. I think I narrowed it down to PSU, motherboard, or CPU.
2. Cleared CMOS. Changed battery. No use.
3. Use paper pin to test PSU. Its light went on, and it powered up a hard disk that was still connected to it (but not to the motherboard). It looks like the PSU is fine.
4. I took the CPU and installed it on another AMD machine I happen to have. The machine powered on. So it was not the CPU that caused the PC to not boot.
My conclusion is that the motherboard is bad. What do you think? Did I miss something important? Many thanks!
