Help me diagnose my Samsung DLP

So my mother in law was watching my daughter today and the TV was on (Samsung HL-R6168W)

She heard a pop and a high pitched noise "like an alarm" then the picture went to black & white.

My first thought without having a chance to look at it is the color wheel.

Has anyone replaced one of these? The process looks easy enough. I've changed the bulb before so I'm not unfamiliar with the insides of the set.

I'm thinking I'll order the part right away if you guys agree on my diagnosis. Looks like they are around $90.

Thanks

(Update)
It's been a while but I figured I'd update this thread.

After receiving a defective color wheel the first time (bad bearing I think) I RMA'd it and got a replacement which has been working perfectly for about 2 weeks now. Kudos to the Amazon marketplace seller who was very easy to deal with.

Maybe open the sucker up first and see what's what rather than blindly ordering parts. Although, it certainly does sound like the color wheel.

Yeah open it up if you aren't unfamiliar but that definitely sounds like the color wheel has bit the dust.

Well, I just got around to opening it up, and my diagnosis was correct.

Notice the small pile of brightly colored dust.. there was nothing left of the wheel.
Hopefully the replacement will be here on Tuesday (stupid holidays!)

That's kind of crazy that the color wheel can just pop like that! At least DLPs are somewhat easy to repair yourself when it comes to replacing parts. I had to replace the DMD Panel in mine awhile back, and excluding lacking a proper sized screwdriver, it wasn't really hard at all.

Great job, I'm sure you've saved yourself a few hundred dollars repairing it yourself.

I'm not sure of what they do out of warranty, but at least while the product is in warranty, the technicians would normally just replace the entire light engine assembly rather than replace a bad part. The light engine assembly consists of quite a few parts (including the color wheel and the DMD panel), and also costs quite a pretty penny.

So, if they do still attempt to replace the whole thing, you're definitely right about him saving quite a bit.
