I wouldn't collect anything with drm I couldn't crack. Otherwise, it doesn't matter much. I only collect video I especially like, and digital isn't very special.

Yeah but the video you collect do you have it in digital or disc format ?

Since regular DVD is a wider track it would take more damage to make the track unreadable especially if you use the narrower beam of a Blu-Ray player.

DVD. I don't own a bluray player. The stuff I like is old for the most part, so there's little benefit to higher resolution.

By digital do you mean a storage drive? Do you make regular back ups of that drive?

optical discs ARE digital. Theres no such thing as analog bits.

Anyway, I have started ripping all my DVD's to my 12TB NAS. Its gonna take a while, mostly because I cant put 4.7GB at a time on there and store my whole collection. Gonna have to convert them to 600MB rips.
Xvid I guess.

Have not purchased a DVD or Blu-Ray in many years thanks to Netflix and Amazon Prime.

I only own two blu-rays.

Princess Bride (which also came with the DVD)
Reservoir Dogs.

Not planning to rip either of them.

Do you think Blu Rays look that much better than DVDs ?

on a 42 inch television? Yes.
Not so much on my 24 inch monitor. but the ripping is mostly for convenience, not quality. I can watch them on my computer and am perfectly happy.

Digital or DVD & Blu Ray discs for movie collecting ? Which in your opinion is better?

what is the purpose of the collection?

movies you intend to watch in you basement hi-def projector theater setup?

movies you intend to watch on your phone?

movies you hope will be worth something some day?

simple hoarding?

i wouldn't do anything but bluray because the quality of video and audio while streaming isn't remotely close to bluray.

You can collect digital files with more options through piracy.

It is ABSOLUTELY stupid to collect digital downloads/streams over blu-rays. Not that I'm proud of blu-rays or anything, but any collection needs to have physical, tangible assets.

Also, many blurays come with digital copies these days.

Why collect movies at all?
Anything a few months old is on demand digital HD.

I don't understand people who collect movies... do you ever repeat watch them?
The only people I know who repeat watch movies are children.

I think some people see a movie in the theater and have a wonderful experience.
It really sticks out in their minds due to the size and sound and adrenaline rush.
Similar to other drugs, they want to relive the experience.
The experience is gone and will never happen again with the same movie.

It's a waste to collect movies.

additionally, if you are watching a movie with more than 1 person, it's usually cheaper to purchase it on bluray than it is to pay for 2+ tickets to see it in the theater. plus you can watch it whenever you want, get drinks/food from the kitchen, pause it to piss, not worry about the dicks in front of you on their cellphones, etc. only downside is you have to wait months to see it.

i redbox a ton of movies but there are some i purchase. and yes i watch the same movie multiple times. or sometimes i'll just watch scenes from a movie.

Collecting movies is no more a waste of time than collecting baseball cards, guns, cars, computers, or whatever else someone may collect.

For me, I'll often just wait to see a movie until it comes out on Blu-ray because I can buy the Blu-ray cheaper than my wife and I going to see it at the theater. For example, we didn't get around to seeing Inception or Insterstellar in the theater but I bought each for well under $20 (I believe Interstellar was just $10). Yeah, maybe we'll end up not liking it enough to watch it again and again, but it still was cheaper than going to the theater and I can add it to my collection on my Plex server and who knows - maybe we'll watch it again.

Additionally, just because something is on Netflix or Amazon now doesn't mean it will be there forever, so I will purchase certain movies/shows even if they're on Amazon/Netflix (especially if they're on sale). Band of Brothers/Pacific, Star Trek, Game of Thrones, etc. are examples of this. And yes, we do rewatch many movies as well.

OP, stick to Blu-ray and build a Plex server and rip them to the Plex server so you can stream them. You can set the quality of the rip and it will look better than coming from Netflix or Amazon.

I'll be the first one to prize space over quality, but even I will admit that 600MB is pretty chincy in 2015.
