Help me decide which OS to use

I have software that I currently use for business purposes that is running on win ME. I am planning to upgrade the software and want to use this chance to change to a better OS, since I was stuck with ME. I have win 2000 and Vista business to choose from. The software will run on either, I do not have very sophisticated needs and I know 2000 but vista presents an unknown that I would rather not deal with. Which would be a better choice for a 5 year time window. thank you

If by have you mean currently own, I would say try them both out.

If not, and you're made nervous by the fact that extended support for Windows 2000 ends on July 13, 2010, you might as well move to Vista now. From personal experience over eight months I can say it's a great operating system. If you're not bothered by lack of official support and have no interest in change, Windows 2000 all the way.

Heh!

I run W2K Pro and Vista HP... And, to tell you the truth, I like them both!

The only thing I actually *need* Vista for is, Windows Movie Maker.

If you're looking for a good reason to pick Vista over W2K Pro - I don't know what it would be, except some person bias.

As far as support goes - MS is still providing security ugrades for W2K - matter of fact, MS just released a security upgrade for Office 2000 - which I run on both W2K and Vista (minus Outlook).

If it was me, I'd go with Vista, I suppose... but I don't know why!

EDIT

I changed my mind... go with W2K Pro... but I still don't know why! 😀

For a 5 year time window it only makes sense to go with Vista, it is a great OS. Vista will still be getting updates in 5yrs time, 2000 will not.

All other reasons aside...You've gone through about an 8 year gap since your last OS purchase. Assuming you'll do something similar again I would say don't start with Windows 2000 since it's already 8 years old.

Life will be getting a little tough for Windows 2000 users in the year 2013.

PS - Don't let the naysayers freak you out about Vista. It runs fine.

Anything is better than ME. I have Vista x64, and it is running fine. Only issues so far are with HP not making Vx64 drivers for a LaserJet 1012. Just make sure they have Vista drivers for the hardware that you are running.

Thanks, I have vista loaded so I will stick with that. I have demo'ed vista and it is ok sort of like xp but hard to find some things.

Ron - The Search tool in Vista is excellent, returning results as fast as you can type. Good place to start if you're having any trouble finding something.
