Hi all,
I'm leaving for Guatemala in a couple months for a 6 month (possibly up to 12 month) work assignment and I'd like to be able to get US TV while I'm down there. I'm going to be using a private VPN service with a Chromecast / PS3 to get Netflix / Hulu / etc., but I'd like to hear my options for watching live TV. Here's my situation:
- Likely have a corporate apartment with internet (most likely building-wide wifi). The max download speed offered by the local telcos is 5 mbps, so it likely won't be the fastest thing in the world.
- My brother has FIOS here in the states and I'd like to put a placeshifting-device at his house. He has 25 mbps upload speed.
- My bro has an extra (old) Verizon STB which outputs only in SD that he said I could use. Ideally I'd like to have HD, but if bandwidth is an issue on the local side I won't spring the extra $ for an HD box.
- Devices I'll have in Guatemala: iPhone 5 (with local "4G" service), iPad (with local "4G"), desktop PC (gaming rig), work laptop, a 37" 720p TV, a Playstation 3, and a Chromecast.
Ideally I'd love to be able to watch the TV streams on my TV. I know from researching that I'm a little more limited in that area, but maybe I can "mirror" the display of my laptop using my new Chromecast (I haven't gotten it yet, so I'm not sure how well this works). Worst case I guess I could use my gaming rig with an HDMI out to pipe the streams to the TV, but that's not the simplest thing in the world (see below).
What's the best device for my situation? I've been reading mainly about the Slingbox and Belkin @TV, but I know there are a couple others out there. Is it possible to find something very simple (eg. come home from work, turn on the TV, adjust the input and have US TV right there)? I guess that'd be priority #1 for me, with next being image quality, and then cost.
Anything you guys could recommend would be extremely helpful for me. Thanks in advance!
