Hi,

Well..i'm using Ati 6950..pretty old card..bought fallout 4 and black ops 3, can't even play on low res :) So it's time to buy a new card which i want to use at least for 2 years.
As i read, not for everyone, but Nvidia gtx 9xx series have a coil whine problem. I really like my pc quiet and cold :)
So right now i'm in between gtx 970 and ati 390..one might be noisy, other one runs hot..right?
What would be your advice? Also, which brands are safest for both nvidia and ati?
My psu is high power 850w..cpu is intel 2600k.

Thank you all!

Just for your information, most newer high end video cards suffer from some amount of coil whine. The GTX 970 and AMD 390 series suffer from it. It's mostly luck of the draw. However after extensive research i went with the MSI Gaming 4G GTX 970 card and have only minimal coil whine that is nearly undetectable. I personally like how cool and quiet this card runs and consumes a lot less power than a comparable 390 card.

Welcome to AT!

You can have a 390 that's cooler and quieter than a 970 and vice versa.

If you will overclock your 2600K, then consider an EVGA B-stock 980 Gaming ACX2.0 for $359.99. If you are not going to overclock your 2600K, then go for the MSI Gaming GTX 970 for $280 or the Asus Strix GTX970 for $280.

Summary:

I would recommend MSI Gaming or Asus Strix 970 for 1080P with a stock 2600K and they also come with a choice of a free choice AAA game. I would recommend the PowerColor PCS+ R9 390 or Sapphire R9 390 Nitro if you are gaming at 1440P and don't care for the free Assassin's Creed Syndicate or Rainbow Six Siege game. If you need more horsepower and do not mind the refurbished EVGA 980 card with 1 year warranty, at $360, it's a solid deal but ideally only if you overclock that 2600K to take full advantage of the extra horsepower over the 970/390 cards.
