I want a buy a camcorder badly as it has been quite sometime since we've last taken family videos..........our last video cam was more like a rocket launcher (you know the shoulder ones) ....its become quite old and we are planning on buying a new one..........can someone recommend me one? the most important thing for me is that the video should be digital...........and moreover the video should be transferrable to a PC.........most of the camcorders I've seen on the net are either 8mm or miniDV ..........and I haven't read anywhere that they can be connected to a computer........is the feature I'm asking for not yet a standard? I want the output to be either .avi or .mpeg or whatever.........as long as it transfers into my PC i will be happy with it....my budget is around 700 usd max......looking forward to your replies

I prefer Digital8 because of it's backward compatability with Hi-8 and 8mm. It's quality is as good as miniDV and the tape itself is FAR cheaper. Sears sells the TRV840 for $900.00, but you can pricematch there for $750.00. See if Sears has an older, discontinued model for less money. You can still price match. I'd rather buy from Sears, because it's easy to return if you don't like it. BTW, My inlaws are running over to Walmart to snag a TRV58 for $215.00, because it's discontinued. That's a Hi-8 unit with 2-1/2" LCD and no stabilization. Not the best, but damn, only $215.00! :Q I told them to grab it along with a couple Hi-8 tapes and shoot with it a while. If it doesn't suck, just keep it. Otherwise return it and use those $4.00 Hi-8 tapes when they purchase the Digital8 unit they wanted in the first place. Looks like they may have waited too long, because the TRV530 may be hard to come by at the low $600.00 price I found for them to match at Sears, which doesn't seem to carry it now.

It's about $100.00 more for a 3-1/2" LCD over a 2-1/2", and well worth it. It may be worth tracking down a TRV530, but Sears doesn't carry it. It's still got the 3-1/2" LCD, but it's only in the $600.00 range. They both use the i.LINK®* DV Interface (IEEE 1394) as well as USB.
