Well asap I say in about 1-2 weeks i will be making my own comp an amd of course for gaming, my friend will be coming down to help me put it together. All i need is from you guys to decide on my computer parts. My budget is around 1,300 to 1,400 bucks. I will be overclocking but after a couple of weeks so my cpu can get use to mobo.Im thinking from 2 ghz to 2.5 ghz. Just pick the best parts for a 1,300-1,400 bucks and i will check it out. Thank you!!!

1400 is pitiful for a gaming comp....howver, it can be done (just far from top-of-the-line)

you can eaily get a cheap A64, just not a newer model, and not FX series (I love my FX-53, but it is still 700 USD!)

Videocard: I'd stay away from the Radeons (personal pref, I HATE ATi) Try a 6600 GT or something maybe...or even lower 6000 series, or maybe even an older FX series.

Sound: well, onboard sucks, expecially for newer games with 3D support...I'm gonna say Creative all the way....you don't need to go top of the line here...each generation has few improvements (who can tell the diff between 90 and 108 signal-to-noise ratio? not counting an android....lol)

Motherboard: Don't go cheap here...you get what you pay for...I like my MSI K8N Neo2 Plat....its somewhere around 150 USD, but it is better than the ASUS boards, and it doesn't have PCI-E (good for you, pci videocards are not cheap)

Memory: go a well known company. I love Corsair, but Crucial is prob cheaper...go as good as you can afford here the lower tha latency, the better. (FAQ: what does latency mean - how fast the memory chips can switch between the rows and coulumns, or more basically, how fast it can accept data)

Hard drive: I don't like Maxtor because they seem cheap. A good SATA drive is best, and I love Western Digital for their 3 yr warranty...my Raptors get a 5 yr, but that is rare.

CD/DCD - ROM/RW: Well, I don't know what you want here. I'm holding off on DVD-RW for now, since dual layer is fairly new in burners, and therefore unreliable and expensive...I love Plextor's premium drives, but they aren't cheap...Avoid Garden Variety drives, I'd say plextors cheaper drives?

Case: Whatever works for you....

Floppy drive : Don't forget this....despite what people say, you still need one of these.

Power supply: Antec does pretty good with their True 480W models, and their 430W models. Once again, you get what you pay for...Avoid the flashy 'UV light' sort of crap. Unless this will be a 1400 paperweight.....hehe.

I'd say look between www.newegg.com and www.mwave.com
Use newegg for finding the parts first, then see if mwave has it cheaper (don't forget to look at shipping costs too)

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask.

gaming only one choice A64, but if you do encoding and other stuff...look for INTEL

suggestions for A64

DFI NF4 Ultra, or SLI version
A64 3000 or 3200+
1 GB Mushkin Blue (UTT), twinmos, or quality TCCD ram
HD...ur pick
psu...ur pick but don't skip
case...your pick
NEC 16x DL dvdrw...cheap
your pick oh graphics card...since ur budget is 1300, you should opt for 6800gt or better

XP-90 and a 92mm fan with good air flow,

misc here and there...

you can get a lot for that budget
do some reading with the guides and use newegg to get a general idea

Huh? That budget is more than enough for a decent gaming rig...althought the $ is quite low these days compared to the ? :p

trunthiendo sees it quite right...choose a A64 3200+ (wait for venice!) and overclock it. 2500 should be no prob for it.
Graphics board...yeah 6800GT+, but also 6600GT will do. See my setup in sig e.g., runs FarCry everything maxed with 4xAA and 2xAF with 50 frames av....so more than enough for CS and wow....
oh, just remember I also play wow...everything maxed 4xAA, smooth as silk...
My rig would also fit your budget 1:1 ;)

$1,400?
Goto www.monarch.com
pick a barebones system, or if you have a decent case & PSU and reuse your hd, and monitor - you can scrape by fairly well.
Bare Bones System w/ Athlon 64 (939) 3200, Lian Li PC-60 aluminum case, with MSI K8N Neo4 PLatinum, antec true 430 PSU, thermaltake 80mm ballbearing fan, Thermaltake A1772 AMD recc for Athlon, thermal grease, 2 DDR 400(3200) 512K (Total 1G), free HL2, and Far Cry.
Total with YOUR HD, Monitor, keyboard, mouse, etc was $662.
Go check it out!.
(ps- this was a quickie, not responsible for mistakes :->)
Lots of money left for a better MB, memory, new HD, etc!

Trung.....check a gain, Intel is falling from its thrown of being better for encoding. Even the lower level A64s closed the gap, the upper levels (4000+, 3800+, FX-55, FX-53) and equal or better than Intel. Not to mention AMD stuff takes less power than the stupid prescot cores.

Bah, I'm building my own system this summer and I only have a $1k budget (without moniter). So far, I've managed to cram in this stuff:
Athlon 64 3200+ Socket 939
1GB (2x512) Corsair Value Select RAM
MSI Neo4 Platinum (non-SLI version)
3x Western Digital "Caviar" 7200RPM 80GB Hard Drives (for a RAID 5 array)
Thermaltake "Tsunami" Alluminum Case with 5 internal HDD bays, clear side window, 3 fans (No PSU, got a 425W one for free at a local store's grand opening sale)
Radeon x600 Pro 256MB 16x PCI-E
NEC DL DVD +/- RW
Media keyboard, wireless optical mouse, 5.1 speakers, floppy drive

All about $1000

My question to DfiDude is why don?t you do a little reading and find out the parts YOU want then ask for recommendations and experiences. That?s the whole fun of making a computer and tailoring it for yourself, if you want someone else to decide what is right for YOU then dell or Compaq can do it.
