i was given the following offer for ucla housing today.
triple in Sproul, the 180ft for 3 people!!!!!
or hilgard double
anyone?
i heard there is no "restaurants" for hilgard house and no high speed?
triple has no A/C? is it cool enough? LA is hot, w/o AC how do you exactly survive?
what should i get?
i want high speed internet but dun want 3 people in a room in crammed place

go for sproul. you'll have a lot more fun there. my first year i stayed in rieber and my second in canyon point. needless to say, i had A LOT more fun my first year and i met way more people than i did the second year.

don't trip man. i just finished my first year at UCLA. several things you must consider and know.
1. LA isn't as hot as you think. im from the bay area and i thougth LA is suppose to be hotter, but it aint, its actually a little cooler. theres always a nice breeze to set off the heat and occasional overcast as well 2. what type of person are you? sproul is very fun and is the typical place for first years to live. yes it is sorta cramped, but its not that bad. its fun and social and you will meet lots of people youll like. it is slightly dirty in my opinion and i dont like community baths. so if you dont mind walking down the hall everytime you wanna shower or crap, then its all good.
3. sproul is cheaper. sproul houses mostly 1st and 2nd years. theres two parts, the north and south, and each has ONE elevator that is slow as hell. sproul is more centrally located closer to the other residences and campus. NO A/C, but its not hot in the rooms...really, unless you intentionally turn on the heat, youre cool. opening the windows gives you enough of a breeze, especially if youre on the higher floors.
4. i dont know much about hilgrad, but i think its pretty much for like "special" situations i.e. students with children, handicapped..etc. it is rather far away from the middle of campus where class is and it is way UP the hill. im sure the houses are nice though, just like any other normal apartment loaded with the extras. if you plan on eating in the dining halls, hilgard is way way far from that.

bottom line, if i wereyou, id choose sproul, it wouldnt be my first choice, but it is better than hilgard.
IM me if you have other questions "ungalicious"

choose Sproul, Hilgard is isolated and is mostly transfers. You wont meet as many people, and it wont be as fun. The high rises are more fun, and less expensive. Just wear flip-flops in the shower. Keep your windows open, and it'll stay nice and cool, just close the curtains in the afternoon if you're on the sun side.

late.

I thought the Hilgaard houses were all converted back to sorority houses. Either way.. the Hilgaard houses are on the opposite side of campus from all the other dorms. So you really won't be going to the dining halls, and you will not be making spontaneous trips to any of the dorms. But they a very close to the psych buildings, Knudsen, and Shoenburg.

And instead of dining halls, I think they had a kitchen and some person would come cook for an hour. So you had an hour to eat, whereas in the dining halls would be open for a few hours.

live in sproul. i lived in a triple in sproul my first year and it was a lot of fun. my friend vinh is the RA for 3n and i also know the 5n RA priti. all the ra's are pretty cool.

nearly all freshmen are placed in triples anyways so there really isn't much of a way to get out of it.

hilgard is on the same street as all the sorority houses. its somewhat closer to campus but you meet no one there.

having no a/c in the dorms doesn't really kill you. bring a fan if you can't take it.

as for the dining hall, sproul has carusos that's open for lunch from 11:30-2pm, and dinner from 5-11pm. dining hall have hours for breakfast, lunch and dinner. puzzles is open for breakfast on the go and dinner/late night from 5pm to 2am next year.

how hot does it generally get in sproul rooms? (i can't stand heat)
what is RA? resident assistant?

what buildings are the Knudsen,Shoenburg?
i'm a Bus-econ major.

seems like sproul sounds much better than the hilgard.
(i am a transfer and my last option was on campus triple and thats what i got, completely Fvked up)

I lived in rieber my first year and had a blast. Living in the dorms is so much fun. As for the heat, we had an electric fan and it was good enough for us. It might suck at first having 3 people in such a small area but you'll get used to it. Go for Sproul.

I don't think you have to worry too much about heat at UCLA. It's close enough to the ocean that temps are resonable. High school year temps maybe 80-85 max (someone correct me if I'm wrog).

have fun and good luck.

Shoenburg is pretty much only Ethnomusic classes, and Knudsen is mostly physics classes (with some CS lectures).
